Friday and I just finished working on a presentation on familysearch.org for tomorrows Family History Fair in Gladstone, OR. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to share the changes happening to the web site. I am grateful for all those who work so hard to make these genealogy research tools available for free to everyone. The online information about the fair can be found at _http://www.milwaukie_or_fhc.byethost31.com/_ (http://www.milwaukie_or_fhc.byethost31.com/)

Yet another attack on access to records — yet another assault on the right to the free flow of information. (http://www.legalgenealogist.com/components/com_wordpress/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Wash.records.jpg) This time, it’s in Washington State, where the Department of Health wants to take records that are now public and readily accessible and close them. Washington is and has long been an open records state; birth, marriage, death and divorce records and many other types of genealogically-useful records are readily available for genealogical and other research. Now the Health Department wants to close them. If its proposal is accepted, birth records would be closed for 125 years, and all other vital records for 50 years ... judiscot@gmail.com "Puzzles of the Past" _http://puzzlesofthepast.blogspot.com/_ (http://puzzlesofthepast.blogspot.com/) What do you hold so close to your own circle of life that you would not put a price on it? The November IL INT will be switching to the third Saturday! Duane Funk will be sharing insights concerning the War of 1812 and the Civil War on Saturday, November 17, 2012. Regular hours...9:30 to 11:30 a.m. At the GFO. He hopes to see a good turnout despite the date change. If you¹ve not ever attended an Illinois Interest meeting...If you have someone in your history who once lived in Illinois... If you have any interest in the War of 1812 (it¹s the 200th anniversary you know*)...If you have any interest in the Civil War (even if it is not Illinois-connected)...this is a meeting from which you will gain a lot! Just show up, and enjoy. You¹ll be glad you did. *Do you know that the pension records for all the soldiers who served in the War of 1812 are being digitized? The ones that have been done are on Fold 3...and free. They will be always be free, even if at some point another website becomes their home. And you can help it get done. You can find the right page by searching for ³1812 pension records Fold 3². Perhaps it is because I am not well acquainted with either pension records or Fold 3, but I found it to be a ³learning curve² so play with it when you have time. I looked in New York State and found people with surnames beginning with A and B. (As records are digitized they are put online.) New batches will come online as time passes. But even if you cannot find your 1812 soldier, you can get a look at what kind of information will be found eventually. How is this happening? Genealogists are contributing funds to pay for the work. It costs approximately 45¢ a page. The Illinois State Genealogy Society is one of those collecting. If you are fast, you could send a donation to them while their ³special offer² is still available. They will double whatever amount you send! And Ancestry will double that! Making each $1 you send worth $4 of pension money. (At the recent conference in Rockford, the ISGS table took in over $700 in donations ranging from ³loose change² to $200. That will be $1400 that ISGS sends in...and $2800 by the time Ancestry doubles it. What a deal! The ISGS address is <http://www.ilgensoc.org/cpage.php?pt=268> where you can pay online (or find an address to send a check clearly labeled for 1812 records). But hurry...the ³sale² is nearly over. Questions? Write to Kristy at hannah@teleport.com
Sat, November 3, 10am Ginger Christmas-Beattie will present "Transcribing old documents”, a lecture on reading the English handwriting of America in the 16th and 17th centuries. I have an updated list of the books we have for sale at the library after the Fall Seminar. If you wish to see the list, please email me and I'll send you a PDF copy. We would love to get a committee going to help sell our surplus books. This would include live sales as we had at the Fall Seminar or online sales. Saturday, November 3, 10 am Ginger Christmas-Beattie will present "Transcribing old documents”, a lecture on reading the English handwriting of America in the 16th and 17th centuries. This can be applied to any document once one has an understanding of the old grammatical forms. Ginger has over 40 years of practical genealogical research experience, and has been involved with the Genealogical Society of Washington County, as well as other genealogical societies throughout the United States. As author and publisher, she has produced 13 books and 7 CD's of historic documents, census and court records and a book on the Christmas Family history through her business, Ancestral Tracks. If you have documents you need help with please bring them and we can work on them together. Carol and I will bring some examples to practice on as well. The following is an outline of Ginger's presentation. A four page hand-out will be available at the meeting. The Computer SIG will be having our bi-monthly meeting this Saturday, October 20th starting at 9:30 and going till 11:30. The presenter will be Peggy Baldwin demonstrating how to use spreadsheets for genealogical research. Excel in particular. This should be an interesting topic, since it is working outside of conventional genealogical software programs. Years ago when I bought my first computer, it was supposed to make my life easier. I encountered the term "spreadsheet".--so this thing can also help make my bed? No. A wake up call. "We are no longer in Kansas!" The computer and the software that controls them, is an entirely new way to look at and organize information, which we as genealogists, accumulate massive amounts of. Peggy's presentation will give us more tools for coordinated research and organization. Well worth your time. Be there! Following the Computer SIG, the Master Genealogist Software Users Group will have their meeting starting at Noon and continuing until 2 PM. Once again it will be an open discussion between attendees. There has been no recent update of the program. I continually stumble upon new features as I do my recording, but not enough insights to make a presentation. Have you some of those? Come and let's share them. Roger Ostrom, Coordinator, Computer SIG; Coordinator TMG SUG Daphne Garrison, Coordinator Computer SIG
Greetings! Family Tree DNA changed my code on me, so the code I gave you at the presentations is: Aul1c1no Don't add the 2012. If you are my contact with a group where I spoke, please inform your group. Their original statement was: As to the people that you have promised discounted rates, we would be happy to help them. Please use the flyers that use have been sent "generic flyers" and have the customers use the code " Aulicino2012" to receive the discounted prices. I will set this up now; this expires in December. Then an email changing just the I to a one in my name, so I thought the 2012 was still in the code as it is good only for this year. If you ordered and didn't get the sale prices, call them to tell them all this. They will amend your cost. If you haven't ordered omit the 2012 and place your order by December. "IN December" is open for debate on what it means. I would argue until Dec 30. Anyone can use this code even if you didn't hear me speak! LOL Thanks E If you do not hear from me in a timely manner, just write again...I was buried in email. Because of many busy schedules, no one was available to lead the meeting so it was decided to take a fall "vacation". There will be no meeting of the Illinois Interest Group tomorrow. The November 10th meeting will be on the subject of 19th Century military studies with both the War of 1812 and the Civil War being the subjects of interest. Duane Funk will lead the discussion. Put it on your calendars for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 10th. Kristy
Hi Everyone, The GFO Writers' Forum will meet on Saturday, October 13th, from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself or for others. We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last seven years writes better than they did when they started. This year we are working with Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006. Each year we work with a book, but this particular book has been the most helpful of any book we worked with. Now we are working more specifically on language and at this meeting we will be working with Tool 31 Workshop: "Building Your Work Around a Key Question" Feel free to bring you lunch, so you can stay to monthly program at 2 p.m.! Hope to see you there!! Peggy Peggy Baldwin, MLS Family Passages LL www.familypassages.com 503-916-9410 Pacific Northwest & Oregon Trail

All Powell Boulevard traffic will be shifted to the north side of the street between SE 10th and 22nd avenues, with one lane open in each direction. . Several turning restrictions will be in place. Access to businesses will remain open via side street driveways. . Access to southbound 17th Avenue from eastbound Powell Boulevard will remain open. . The pedestrian crossing at Powell Boulevard and 13th Avenue will be closed, but the signalized crossing at Milwaukie will remain open. . Eastbound bus stops at Milwaukie Avenue and Powell Boulevard will be closed. A temporary stop for Line 70 will be added on Powell at 13th Ave. A temporary stop for Line 19 will be added on Milwaukie at Powell. . Demolition activities outside normal construction hours are approved under a noise variance from the City of Portland. Pile driving scheduled for next week. Crews will be installing shoring to facilitate construction of the south abutment of the light rail bridge over Powell Boulevard. The shoring will be driven into place with an impact hammer (similar to what you may have heard this past Saturday and Monday).
