    1. [GFO] Volunteer needed for Wed. evening 5-8
    2. Cathy
    3. The genealogy library stays open until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings to accommodate patrons who can't visit during the daytime hours. For security reasons, we need to have two volunteers working this shift. One of our volunteers will be gone for an extended time and will later be moving out of state, so we need to find a permanent replacement. Is anyone available to fill this spot? The library cannot keep the late hours if no one steps forward. Please let me know if you can help. Leave a message at the reception desk, (503) 963-1932 or reply to me. Thanks, Cathy Lauer Volunteer Coordinator

    1. [GFO] Reminder: YOUR help is needed at GFO, Friday March 15th
    2. Laurel Smith
    3. Friday, March 15th from 9-3 there will be a "Media Mission" event where we will be going through the same steps we did with the periodicals. We've scheduled this early to help with the parking situation. The early birds shouldn't have any trouble. There are more than a dozen boxes of cd's, tapes, microforms and the like that we hope to sort, discard, and redistribute to clear overburdened shelves. Again, you can arrive anytime and leave anytime for this (hopefully) one-time event. Parking is a little easier at 9 than the rest of the day, so arrive early if you can. Laurel will try to be there by 8:30 to open up Lots of people are needed to get these jobs done, so if you have a few hours to give for the benefit of your genealogical organization and library, please add this event to your calendar. We really, really need YOU! For more information you may contact Laurel at president@gfo.org or 503-513-5500. Here's a draft of an upcoming Insider article that may interest you: Sunday Mornings at the Library After the map sorting event described below, a new event was born-the concept of planning library work parties for most Sunday mornings when the library is closed, the building is quiet, traffic is light, and parking is a breeze! We understand that this is not the ideal time for everyone, but if this is a time you can help, please do. Events will begin at 9 am, but volunteers may arrive any time after that, up until around 12 when the library opens. Work may continue until later, but there will likely be something to do at least until noon. If in doubt, you can call the library to see if there's still "partying" going on. There are many things that need doing: Ongoing organization with the maps for certain, additional processing of media, probably some effort toward book sales, missing books and media hunts, and anything else the library might need. It's also been a great deal of fun meeting new people not often seen in the library. Periodical Sorting Party Back in January a group of wonderful volunteers came together to help sort about twenty boxes of donated periodicals. That day, we were able to reduce that number to only six boxes, and with the hardest part done, we have processed all but one. This not only generated much needed space in the library workroom, it enabled us to get missing issues in collections we have onto the shelves where they are available to all of you, and made the duplicates available on the free table outside the library to anyone interested in them. This project will be repeated from time-to-time as donations are received and processing is needed. Maps - April 7th Following the successful periodical sorting party, we scheduled Map Quest in March, aimed at doing the same with the GFO's collection of maps. Many, many thanks to all of you that came for the Map Quest. With so many wonderful volunteers we had maps located from their various hiding places and roughly sorted in just a few hours. It was exciting to see what a wonderful collection of maps we have and didn't know about. It will take some time to get them all sorted and cataloged, but we have made a great start. We are planning to continue working on this project on the first Sundays of the month at 9:00 am until noon or whenever. Come when you can. Doris Cruickshank, map project coordinator Media - April 14 As of this writing, a Media Mission is planned for mid-March. We hope this event will be as successful as the two previous and will be ongoing for a time. If media (microfilms, microfiche, cassettes, DVDs) is something you like (or even if it isn't, but you want to help), mark your calendar for April 14th and come to the library then. Collection Development - April 21 Donated books will go through the first steps in processing to decide if they will be added to our shelves. Those destined to be sold will need a little research beforehand. Special skills: None. If you can look up books in our library catalog (with provided training) and record their catalog number or look up book prices from three specific websites (training provided) and jot down your findings, then you have the perfect skill sets to help out. Goals: To allow the collection development committee to focus on the books we need rather than spending time screening duplicates; to find the books we can sell to clear more shelves in the workroom while binging in much needed funds for the GFO. We hope you will want to be part of this effort and will come to help on April 21st. Collection Organization-April 27th If you've heard that the GFO will be getting a new library catalog--it's TRUE. To prepare for the migration of our old catalog holdings we have lots of preparation to do. One of the activities taking place on 4th Sundays will be a hunt for missing items. Another will be helping find catalog anomalies so a cataloger can correct them before migration. There are lots of little things to be done to make migration go more smoothly. This can be a lot of fun, and promises you will become more familiar with the library layout and the collection.

    1. [GFO] To anyone not going somewhere else this Saturday morning
    2. Kristy Gravlin
    3. The program is on for this Saturday at the GFO Library. Lisa McCullough will lead the discussion for Women¹s History Month...concentrating on women with Illinois connections who have invented things to improve the world...and some ideas on how to find them ‹ as clues to finding your women too. She¹ll be looking for you at 9:30 a.m. On Saturday, March 9th. We know that a number of you will be out of town to attend a genealogy workshop, or to see family, or just to get a jump on spring travel. The group may not be large but it will be friendly and welcoming. So, if you don¹t have somewhere interesting to go, take this opportunity to sit in with the Illinois Interest Group...we know you will enjoy your morning! Kristy...Harlene (who will be in Gresham I think)...and Lisa

    1. [GFO] FW: Powell traffic; nighttime demolition
    2. Laurel Smith
    3. From: Koozer, Jennifer [mailto:KoozerJ@trimet.org] Sent: Tuesday, March 05, 2013 4:00 PM Cc: Egnew, Coral Subject: Powell traffic; nighttime demolition Hello neighbors, Please see construction updates below. Traffic constraints on Powell Frontage Road (westbound at 18th Ave): ongoing for a few months To improve bike and pedestrian connectivity, the light rail project is building a new sidewalk link along the north side of Powell, from underneath the railroad bridge to 19th Avenue. This requires construction on the Powell Frontage Road. Businesses will remain accessible but watch for detour signage. NIGHTTIME demolition and lane closures on Powell Boulevard (between 13th and 22nd avenues): week of March 11 In preparation for bridge and sidewalk construction, crews will be demolishing the retaining walls along the north side of Powell Boulevard near the railroad overpass. Because this work requires lane closures on Powell, the work will be performed Monday-Friday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. under a noise variance from the City of Portland. Powell will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between 13th and 22nd avenues, and the 21st Ave intersection will be controlled by flaggers. Access to driveways and side streets will be maintained. This work is currently scheduled to begin west of the railroad overpass on Monday, March 11, continuing for about one week. Similar demolition east of the railroad overpass will take place about two weeks later. Please share this information with your neighbors, and please don't hesitate to contact me with questions. Thanks in advance for your patience! 1. [GFO] Writers' Forum Saturday at the GFO
    2. Peggy Baldwin
    3. Hi Everyone, The GFO Writers' Forum will meet on Saturday, March 9th, from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself or for others. We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last seven years writes better than they did when they started. This year we are working with Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006. Each year we work with a book, but this particular book has been the most helpful of any book we worked with. Now we are working more specifically on language and at this meeting we will be working with Tool 35 Workshop: "Report and Write for Scenes: Then Align Them in a Meaningful Sequence" Feel free to bring you lunch! Hope to see you there!! Peggy Peggy Baldwin, MLS Family Passages LL www.familypassages.com 503-916-9410 Pacific Northwest & Oregon Trail

    1. [GFO] RESPONSE REQUESTED...If you are coming
    2. Kristy Gravlin
    3. As you probably know...if you¹ve looked at the calendar... This coming Saturday is Illinois Interest Day. After receiving two different ³warnings² that something else is happening in Portland, I decided that maybe we should see if anyone is planning to come to the IL INT group at the Forum. The plan for the day is a discussion on women who have made a difference in the history of Illinois...and sometimes in the history of the United States...or even in the world. One began a company that everyone would like represented in their home! We¹ll include some info too in where to begin looking for information about them, or any woman for whom you are searching. Lisa McCullough has agreed to be the guest leader for this interesting...even surprising...morning. __If you are planning to attend, please send me a note today__ (or asap). If we have people coming, it will be ON!~ (If we have no one who will attend, we¹ll cancel and know that you are taking advantage of the opportunity to be somewhere else that will also increase your genealogy skills.) We do hope your answer is yes, but know that other really good things are competing with us. Whichever you choose, you will have a productive day. Please answer as soon as possible. I¹ll be out of the house for a few hours...I thought I should pick up a few necessities as the weatherman says that, where I am, we will have from 8 to 10 inches of snow by tomorrow afternoon. So I¹m going to get in a few groceries before that happens!~ Thankfully the roads will be cleared before very long...but getting out of the yard will be a challenge! Kristy

    1. [GFO] GFO Computer Interest Group
    2. Daphne Garrison
    3. Hi everyone, Due to some changes with the Computer Interest Group, we are considering changing the schedule of the meetings (and other changes in regards to topics as well). What I'd like is to hear from those of you who would come to the meetings if there was something different about them, whether it's the day of the week or the topics. Please consider filling out this survey and letting me know your thoughts on the meetings. Would weekday evenings work better for you? Would you like the meetings to be on the basics of computers, or are you interested in more advanced topics? http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BWRQTCM Feel free to email me directly if that's easier for you. All feedback is appreciated. These meetings are meant to be helpful to the GFO community, but I'm not sure what is needed to accomplish this. Thank you for your time! 1. [GFO] Request to deliver a donation
    2. Cathy
    3. The GFO has 2 boxes of photos to be delivered to the Oregon Historical Society - 1200 SW Park Ave. They can be dropped off anytime. OHS is open Monday-Saturday 10:00-5:00 and Sunday noon to 5:00. They can be left at the front desk. If you are available to deliver the boxes, contact Laurel at GFO (503) 963-1932 for details.

    1. [GFO] Need donation pick up
    2. Cathy
    3. The GFO has been offered a fantastic donation of USGS topographical maps covering all parts of Oregon and some of Washington and California. These are current or a version one or two generations back of the 1:24,000-scale maps. There may be some 1:62,500-scale. The stack will total about 4-6 feet. They are not quite ready to go as they are still being sorted...probably in about a week or two. We will need to have about 4 persons to move them and also a flat-bed dolly (and a pickup to haul them). The maps are being offered by USGS Publishing Network - 2130 SW 5th Ave. If the address sounds familiar, it's the same building that housed the GFO library when we were downtown. Parking will be reimbursed by GFO. If you will be available to help with this donation, please call Jacqueline Olson (503) 251-3268 or GFO (503) 963-1932 to make arrangements.

    1. [GFO] YOUR help is needed at GFO
    2. Laurel Smith
    3. A few weeks ago a group of willing volunteers came together to help sort about 25 boxes of donated periodicals. Exact duplicates were made available to members on the free table outside the library. Attendees got first choice. Some issues were found that were missing from the collections in the library, and other titles that are new to us are being considered for inclusion in the library by the collection development committee. All this resulted in 25 boxes being reduced to four, creating much needed space in the library workroom. Many, many thanks to those who came in to help with the magazines. Two more events are planned: Sunday, March 3th beginning at 9 am (traffic and parking should not be any problem at this time) though you don't have to arrive that early if you don't want. Come when you can, stay until you can. We're calling this event "Map-quest" because we will be going through files and boxes of mixes items to gather all the maps we can find. There are about 24 file drawers and about a dozen boxes. Once the maps are found they can be culled of duplicates-the first step in the process. For other steps after this event, map lovers will be asked to come together for more help with the collection. Watch the Insider for more information. Friday, March 15th from 9-3 there will be a "Media Mission" event where we will be going through the same steps we did with the periodicals. We've scheduled this early to help with the parking situation. The early birds shouldn't have any trouble. There are about a dozen boxes of cd's, tapes, microforms and the like that we hope to sort, discard, and redistribute to clear overburdened shelves. Again, you can arrive anytime and leave anytime for this (hopefully) one-time event. Lots of people are needed to get these jobs done, so if you have a few hours to give for the benefit of your genealogical organization and library, please add one or both of these events to your calendar. We really, really need YOU! For more information you may contact Laurel at president@gfo.org or 503-513-5500. Laurel _____ Laurel Smith President Genealogical Forum of Oregon 503-513-5500

    1. [GFO] Computer SIG /TMG-SUG meeting next Saturday
    2. Roger Ostrom
    3. Once again, the Computer SIG will have their bi-monthly meeting this coming Saturday, February 16th. As always we start at 9:30 and end at 11:30. The meeting's topic will be--"Saving your bacon: How to survive the death of your computer." If you haven't had a total computer crash, you must be new to the use of computers! Most people who have been using computers must realize that we are on an equivalent technological path as perhaps the Ford Model A was in the age of automobiles. (As good as it was mechanically, it did eventually break down rather quickly by today's standards.) For computers there are so many ways for failure to occur and no instant way to recovery. Prevention of loss of data must be a proactive endeavor. This meeting will hopefully address some of those issues and strategies Following the Computer SIG meeting, after a lunch break, the Master Genealogist Software Users Group will meet starting at Noon and going till 2 PM. Consistent with the Computer SIG topic of backup, that issues should carry over to the TMG meeting. Saving your project, preferences, and other export options. I have received an e-mail from Duncan Turner, a 'distance' GFO member and also a TMG SIG in his local area he wrote.. "I am a California member of GFO and will be in the area in February. I plan to attend the TMG and Computer group meetings on 16 Feb. Of possible interest to the TMG group is a new book just released by the Tri-Valley TMG group of the Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society. The book is "Source Templates for The Master Genealogist." It is available from the print-on-demand company Lulu.com If you search for "tmg" it is currently the first on the list. I will have the book to show the group if there is time. I am mainly interested in the activities of the group." This should be an interesting meeting. Roger Ostrom; coordinator Computer SIG, TMG-SUG Daphne Garrison; coordinator Computer SIG .
