    1. [GFO] Report on House Bill 2093
    2. Judy Goldmann
    3. Dear Friends: The House committee on Health Care has decided to leave the time limits on public access to Vital Records as they are now written. > Currently, 100 years after birth > 50 years after death > 75 years after marriage No changes. The Chairman Greenlick mentioned that he was rained upon wth e-mails from genealogists in opposition to the new guidelines. Good Job! I, Carol Surrency, Ted Jones, and one other member of the Forum attended the Hearing today in Salem. Quite an adventure. Judy Goldmann gate736@gmail.com NEW ADDRESS

    1. [GFO] New GFO Book Group Postponed to May 11
    2. Bonnie Randolph
    3. A new interest group is starting at GFO - a Genealogy Book Group. Our first meeting was to be Saturday, April 13, 11:45 - 12:45 pm but since that conflicts with the GFO Spring Seminar, the start-up meeting is postponed to Saturday, May 11, 11:45 am - 12:45 pm at GFO. Please add May 11 and the book group to your calendar. Help decide how often we want to meet, reasonable guidelines, and choose the books we want to discuss. Thanks also to those of you who took the time to email me about the conflict with the Spring Seminar. I'll get this right yet! See you May 11th, Bonnie Randolph

    3. I wrote to various representatives and local officials with my concerns and received this response from Sen. Richard Devlin. sen.richarddevlin@state.or.us <sen.richarddevlin@state.or.us> Dear Ms. Waitman-Ingebretsen, HB 2093 is currently in the House Committee on Health Care and has not been scheduled for a public hearing or work session. If the bill is not scheduled for a public work session by April 8th then it cannot proceed to its secondary referral, the Joint Committee on Ways and Means. As the co-chair of Ways and Means, should the bill come before me I will review it carefully and keep your views in mind. Thank you for writing to me. Sincerely, Senator Richard Devlin ----- Original Message ----- From: Judy Goldmann To: Stanley R. Clarke Cc: ORFORUM-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, April 03, 2013 11:02 AM Subject: Re: [GFO] Oregon Vital Records This information is from Kuri Gill, and others at the legislature. The bill would increase the elapsed time for the public to have use of vital statistics. There will be a hearing in Salem on April 10, 1:00 pm-2:25 pm, at the Capitol. Just where I have not as yet heard. I do not know how to get this information disseminated properly. I read the gfo list, but know that not every one has it. Judy Goldmann House Bill 2093 contains following provision: (4) The preservation management program must provide for the continued availability of historic vital record documents and information for research and related purposes. Vital records are historic when 125 years have elapsed after the date of live birth, 75 years have elapsed after the date of death or fetal death or 100 years have elapsed after the date of marriage, domestic partnership, dissolution of marriage or dissolution of domestic partnership. Supporting documents, including corrections and acknowledgments of paternity, may be included with historic vital records. Records under seal are not historic unless unsealed by court order. Currently, 100 years after birth 50 years after death 75 years after marriage now they want to increase to 100 years for marriage 75 years for death 125 years for birth The bill was introduced at the agency level at the request of the governor as stated in the bill. You may follow the bill by using this website.http://www.leg.state.or.us/mag/home.htm It is currently in the Health Care House Committee. The House committee on Health Care, Chairperson is Mitch Greenlick. https://olis.leg.state.or.us/liz/2013R1/Committees/HHC/Overview The text of 2013 HB 2093, as introduced is available via the links below. 2. Virginia Group Meeting, Saturday, April 6, 10 am This month we'll be discussing Indentured Servants. Those of us with colonial Virginia (and other colonies) ancestors most likely have indentured servants in our families. We'll discuss the causes, how the system worked, the life of the servants, and research sources. If any of you have researched indentured servant ancestors we would love to hear about your research. Everyone is welcome. See you Saturday. 2. Jeremy Millard
    3. I'm a little confused on this. I went to the bill, section 33, ORS 432.121 and it reads: SECTION 33. ORS 432.121 is amended to read: { - (c) When 100 years have elapsed after the date of birth or 50 years have elapsed after the date of death, marriage or divorce. - } So now it will be: Birth records available after 100 years which is the same now Marriage, Divorce and Death records available after 50 years. So I don't see anywhere in the text that shows the 125 year restriction for birth records or 100 years for death and 75 for marriage. Am I missing something? Thanks, Jeremy ________________________________ From: Stanley R. 1. [GFO] Book Group to Start at GFO April 13
    2. Bonnie Randolph
    3. Join a new interest group at GFO - a Genealogy Book Group. Share your thoughts in a discussion of engaging and entertaining books written by people exploring their family history, discovering the truth of their research, and drama of it all. Our first meeting will be Saturday, April 13, 11:45 - 12:45 pm. We can decide how often we want to meet (once a month, every other month, or skip the summer), discuss guidelines, and the fun part, choose the books. Here are some books we might consider for discussion: *The Fiddler on Pantico Run: An African Warrior, His White Descendants, Our Search for Family*, by Joe Mozingo *Reunion, A Search of Ancestors*, by Ryan Littrell *They Came in Ships: Finding Your Immigrant Ancestor’s Arrival Record*, by John Philip Colletta *Roxanna Britton: a Biographical Novel*, by Shirley S Allen *The Quack’s Daughter*, by Greta Nettleton *The Monster in the Closet: A Bumpy Ride Down the Genealogy Trail*, by Judith Harris *Only a Few Bones: A True Account of the Rolling Fork Tragedy and Its Aftermath*, by John Phillip Colletta *The Journey Takers*, by Leslie Albrecht Huber I've had a chance to read *The Fiddler on Pantico Run* and hear the author discuss his book on NPR. Blond Joe Mozingo grew up in southern California surfing to discover he - and many other white and African American Mozingo families - descend from a slave. Mozingo is an award winning investigative reporter. It's a book not only of his genealogical history but his thoughts on race in this county and family history as a basic piece of identity. See you the 13th, Bonnie Randolph

    3. While HB 2093 may be inactive now it could have even greater repercussions if passed. If the time is extended for vital records to become historic they might also be delayed from filing in the State Archives. Greg Sent from my iPad On Apr 3, 2013, at 6:59 AM, "Stanley R. 3. To all volunteer Map Questers, we will be meeting again this coming Sunday, 7 April, starting at 9:00 am. Come when you can. We will: Start cataloging the Oregon maps we sorted last time (need computer typists and map readers, hopefully, 2 teams) Organize the stacks for other areas that we have stacked separately on the file cabinets and get them into drawers (anyone who is interested) And...we have a stack of USGS maps that were donated to us and delivered via Cathy, her pickup and strong volunteers. This needs sorting by state. So, plenty to do. See you Sunday, doris

    1. [GFO] Computer Interest Group: update
    2. Daphne Garrison
    3. Hi everyone! First, I want to thank everyone who took the time to respond to my survey on the direction of the Computer Interest Group. It was very enlightening to see what everyone wants from this sort of group. It looks like the vast majority (83%) find Saturday to be convenient. I would love to move it later in the day, but Saturday times are very rare. Sunday is a distant second at 33%. I'm going to keep the Saturday time we currently have, but move it to 10 AM. The topic requests we got were VERY varied. And, unfortunately, the topic we had planned for April wasn't in the list of requests. The most common request was something on scanning and images: scanning (including scanner settings), saving images, etc. I could lead the discussion (as I'm currently in the process of scanning several dozen found images from my step-great-grandfather's sister), but I'm sure there's someone out there more experienced than I on this topic. **** Is there anyone who would like to lead a discussion on April 20th at 10 AM on scanners, scanning, saving images? **** I'd also like to change the format of the meetings. Because there is such a range of experience levels with computers, I'd like to have the second half of the meeting be open to questions. I'd like the questions to be submitted ahead of time (so I can post the topics to ORFORUM in the hopes of getting experienced members to the meetings to help out). **** If you have any questions that you'd like to ask at the April meeting, please send them to me by April 6th. **** The next meeting will be April 20th at 10 AM. I hope to see you there! Daphne Garrison degarrison@gmail.com

    3. There is a vacancy for an RA (Research Assistant/Receptionist) on the 1st and 3rd Thursday afternoons 1 - 5 p.m. You would be working with Gerry Lenzen who is a very experienced researcher. This is a good chance for you to hone your skills for your own research. If interested, please send a message to volunteer@gfo.org or call the reception desk to leave your name, (503) 963-1932. On another note : The map collection that has been donated to GFO is ready to be picked up. I have the pickup and I'll get the flat dolly from GFO, but I need someone to help with the moving. The address is 2130 SW 5th Ave (the same location as our library before we moved to Gideon Street). I could be available next week on Monday morning, Wednesday all day or Friday all day . Is anyone available to meet me there? We need two or three volunteers. Thanks, Cathy Lauer Volunteer Coordinator
