Hello GFO, I'm sure there are some American Legion members out there in GFO. I tried to get a download of the membership app. online, but wasn't able to get a copy of the PDF file for some reason. I wanted to see what kinds of questions had to be answered and if they required proof of military service from the applicant in order to join. If they required that kind of proof to be shown, does anyone know if a copy of that paperwork would have been kept in the membership file? If yes, would it be possible for a family member to get a copy of that proof? Has anyone ever had a look at or received copies of what was in the file for their father or grandfather? Was there more than just the question and answer form filled out for membership? Thanks. Jan Fenter
Some of you may remember Jack Decker, who served as a GFO Research Assistant a few years back. Gerry Lenzen said that he had gone a few weeks earlier to Jack's house to pick up some books from him. So was a surprise to him--the passing. Lyleth Winther Decker, Jack Leeland Age85 Oct. 02, 1927 May 02, 2013 Prior to his passing May 2, Jack was surrounded by his devoted family and loved ones. Survived by his wife, Mary; sons, David (Emily) of Portland, Eric (Wendy) of Needham, Mass.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Born in Portland to Lee and Anna Decker on Oct. 2,1927, he was named "Jack" by his big sister, Betty (Prestwood). Jack worked for Boise Cascade in research and also served as general manager of paper mills in the Philippines and Guatemala. After retirement he was able to pursue his many interests, especially genealogy. Jack had degrees in chemistry from Oregon State University. He enjoyed walking the dog and going to dog parks to visit his two and four-legged friends. A memorial will be held May 28 at 2 p.m. at Multnomah Presbyterian Church, 7555 SW 45 Ave., Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations to Legacy Hopewell House Hospice, 6171 SW Capitol Hwy., Portland, OR 97239-2649 or your local humane society would be appreciated.

Jan >Is it possible for her to contact the local Veteran's Administration >office, or contact the Navy base in San Diego for confirmation or verify >her dad's service record? I can not speak for the VA, but the Naval Base would not have the records. They would only have the records for the personnel currently serving there. Once the member separates, their records go to the archives. There could be a problem if he was Air Force and separated prior to 1972. A fire destroyed many Army and Air Force records in 1972. Navy/Marine Corp records were not affected. Duane H Funk West Linn, OR
Hello GFO, I need some suggestions or confirmations regarding places to get copies of military service, and possibly discharge papers. I have a friend who has seen her father's memorial page on Find A Grave, at Willamette National Cemetery, and believes the military service information about him isn't correct. She was always told her dad was in the US Navy, and her mom lived in San Diego for a time during her dad's service. The information on her fathers grave marker says "SSGT US AIR FORCE." The new GFO Book Group met Saturday and decided to meet again September 14, 11:45 - 12:45 to discuss *Only a Few Bones: A True Account of the Rolling Fork Tragedy and Its Aftermath*, by John Phillip Colletta. The author writes quite the tale about his family he spent 30 years researching. The GFO library has a copy of this book for checkout as well as the ClackamasCounty Library System. This promises to be an intriguing book to read over the summer. Join us in September for a discussion. Future meetings of the book group will be on the 2nd Saturday in odd months (except July) 11:45 - 12:45. Everyone welcome. Bonnie Randolph bbrandolph@clear.net

Hi Everyone, The GFO Writers' Forum will meet on Saturday, May 11th, from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. PLEASE NOTE OUR NEW TIME -- 1 p.m.!! Also, consider coming to the ALL NEW genealogical book group meeting just before the Writers' Forum (11:45 and 12:45 p.m.) This group is just forming and will be making plans for how they want to do things, so be in on the very beginning. Bring your lunch if you work like. Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself or for others. We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last eight years writes better than they did when they started. This year we are working with Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006. Each year we work with a book, but this particular book has been the most helpful of any book we worked with. Now we are working more specifically on language and at this meeting we will be working with Tool 37 Workshop: "In Short Works, Don't Waste a Syllable." Hope to see you there!! My daughter was looking through a collection of post cards when she found a handwritten card announcing the birth of David Cicero Hines in Oregon in 1915. My daughter bought the card and the search for the descendants began. A kind Lister forwarded Mr. Hines obit which mentioned his children and their place of residence. The 'Net confirmed residence addresses. Today my daughter phoned one of Mr. Hines' sons, spoke with his wife who was thrilled to learn such a treasure exists and in a few days that 1915 birth announcement will be back with the family. Cheers to Rootsweb's orforum listers! Doreen
Many thanks to April for replying with info on Mr. Hines. Cheers!Doreen
Pleas join the Virginia Group, Saturday, May 4, 10 am Researching Revolutionary War Ancestors Part 1. Cherill Vencil will talk about her successful journey to research her ancestor for DAR membership. Cherill said at the beginning of our group that this was one of her goals and she has achieved it! We'll continue with further discussion on the complexities of finding Revolutionary War soldiers: What records are available, where to find them, and of course, which ones are online. See you Saturday Carol & Judi judiscot@gmail.com "Puzzles of the Past" http://puzzlesofthepast.blogspot.com/ "What do you hold so close to your own circle of life that you would not put a price on it? Hello Map Lovers, We will be meeting again on Sunday at 9:00, or whenever you get there, to continue our map sorting and cataloging. We have finished with the Oregon maps that were previously sorted (we won't talk about the stacks on the cabinet) and we sorted the Washington maps. Sunday, we'll catalog the Washington maps and sort the Idaho and Alaska maps for later cataloging. We have come across some very interesting maps which are exciting to get into database so our members and visitors will know we have them and where. This is a long term project and any help at any map quest Sunday is greatly appreciated. We will continue meeting on the first Sunday through the summer. Hope to see you on Sunday. doris
The Manuscript committee is looking for someone who would like to learn how to use the new scanner. This is a job you can do on your own schedule as soon as you are trained. Papers are being organized and sorted now, so the project is ready to go into the next phase. If interested, contact Nanci or call the reception desk (503) 963-1932. A backup person is needed in the mail room to help Jim with preparing the newsletter for mailing. This would require only 2-3 hours per month whenever the publication is ready to go. Contact Jim for specifics. Cathy Lauer Volunteer Coordinator
