Greetings! The GFO DNA Interest Group will meet at 10 am until noon on July 27 at the Genealogy Forum of Oregon, 11th and Division (1505 SE Division) in the basement of the Ford Building. This topic is about mapping your chromosomes using the autosomal test from either 23andMe or Family Tree DNA. We will start at the beginning again and hopefully it will be a bit more simplified. Later this week (probably Thurs) I will post the handout at the GFO website: www.gfo.org Click on the calendar for Saturday and for our meeting to go to the link for the handout. Please bring it with you as there is too much to have copied. Bring your laptop and your kit and password so you can work online. There are some computers available if you get there quickly enough.or you can look over someone's shoulder. Parking is a pain, but all the lots are still open. Carpool if you can. If anyone needs a ride from the area of SE 36, south of Woodstock or wish to come to my house, you can ride with me. Email me for when to be there. 11th Street south of Division is temporarily two-way so you can get in and out of the lot. This will be the case until they are done. The schedule is to be done Aug 4; however, in speaking with the workers yesterday they feel they may be done earlier. NOTE: The October meeting will take up where this one leaves off. If you are interested in the basics of testing for all the major tests, come to the GFO half-day seminar Aug 24. There is a charge for this, but sign up early. Bring a friend! See you there, E If you do not hear from me in a timely manner, just write again...I was buried in email. Greetings, Last week I emailed all of you about Build 36 being upgraded to Build 37 for the Family Finder test. (This has nothing to do with any of the other tests.) The change in the Builds is what we would think of as an update to a program.version such and such. Anyway, I was told that what was to be done for Build 37 was done; however, when two people downloaded the new files, they found the file was titled Build 36. Upon further investigation and in hoping that someone just forgot to change the file name, I discovered there is still more to come. As Bennett (owner of FTDNA) gave the go ahead for a research study which he's also in, it was understood that the system was ok to use. However, for you purists, you may wish to wait. Here is the note that came today from FTDNA: Hi Emily, I'm sorry, I got an answer but got pulled away before I could let you know. There's a small amount of work to do on it and they're aiming at releasing it when we launch a few other changes they've been working on, should be less than a month. Bennett's been nudging them about it though, so it may be released before then. If so, I'll let you know. Thanks for your patience! For our July 27th meeting at the GFO library (for directions see: www.gfo.org) there are a few items to note: 1. We will still cover how to do Chromosome mapping, but if you choose not to download your data there will be no need to bring your laptop. However, you could download some and just practice. 2. Starting Monday July 15, there will be NO WAY to cross the railroad tracks either at Milwaukee (12th) just north of Powell or on 11th just South of Division. However, my understanding is that the parking lot across 11th from the library will be open. I spoke to some of the workers last week about being able to get into the parking lot, but not out of the lot due to the one-way street. They thought the street on that block would be two-way, but said they would check. However, just know that traffic will be a mess and parking nearly impossible. If anyone lives near me (Eastmoreland - 36th and Lambert), you are welcome to hitch a ride. I strongly suggest carpooling. You can part on the street as it is Saturday, and there is a gravel parking lot 1 block east of the library and on the north side of Division. Greetings! This email is going out to all my projects as well as the local DNA interest group, other societies, and individuals so bear with the duplication for some of you. For those of you who have taken the Family Finder test with Family Tree DNA, it is now ok to download your information for the first time (or again, as is the case with many of us) as Build 37 is now what it will be. Why do I say that Build 37 is now what it will be? Because this is Bennett's (Owner of FTDNA) comment. Bennett commented: "In fact neither us nor 23andme are using exactly build 37, but I think you can achieve what you want." So, officially, all of you have the "go ahead" to download your raw data. For those of you who plan to attend the DNA Interest Group at Portland (Oregon)'s GFO (Genealogical Forum of Oregon) Library, please try to download your raw data into Excel by July 27. We will be starting over with the process for the new people or those who need help. BRING YOUR laptop or commandeer a computer early. The meeting starts at 10 a.m. I will have the handouts up at the GFO website sometime the week of July 22. Please copy them for yourself and don't cry at the length. I think you may find them more helpful that those at last year's meeting. ALSO, August 24th I will be doing a half-day seminar at GFO on the Basics of DNA as well as general info on autosomal DNA testing. If you are a newbie or need refreshing, check the GFO website: www.gfo.org for details to sign up. There is a fee that goes to the society. Thank you,. Hello Map Lovers, We will be having a Map Quest session on Sunday, 7July starting at 9:00. Any one interested is welcome to join us. We will continue sorting maps and entering the information into the map database. This is an ongoing project so every little bit accomplished is a step closer to making a master list of the maps held at the GFO. See you Sunday, doris
Greetings! Here's FTDNA's great Summer Sale.one week only. Look at that Family Finder Test.great price! If you are attending a family reunion this summer, take a few tests with you. Tests can be purchased and used later if you keep them out of the heat. They make nice birthday, anniversary or holiday gifts, also. Have your relatives leave a little of themselves behind when they depart. If you have tested with 23andMe and AncestryDNA for the autosomal test, it is similar to the Family Finder test, so don't buy that, but have yours transferred to FTDNA from either of those other companies. See Third Party Transfers under the FAQ section at www.familytreedna.com There's time to order your test if you do it now and have the results by the next DNA Interest Group meeting..but barely enough time, so order it right away. So jump in to the Gene Pool and cool off! Spread the word to everyone! Emily If you do not hear from me in a timely manner, just write again...I was buried in email. Greetings! FIRST: Read my blog post for the posting prior to this sale. If you have tested at 23andMe or AncestryDNA for your autosomal markers, you can transfer those results to Family Tree DNA this week only for $49 rather than $99. We've never seen this sale below. Even if you have only just ordered these tests, purchase an upgrade now and move the data later. If you need help for this, call the company before the weekend at: 713-868-1438. NEXT: It is time to honor all fathers, past and present, and what a better way to do it than to give your father a Y-DNA test to allow him to see how he connects along his all-male line back to the oldest known male ancestor. This ancestor is the progenitor of all living males! And what a way for fathers to leave a bit of themselves connected to their descendants for many, many years to come! Honor your father with a Y-DNA test or an upgrade. All Y-DNA testers should now consider doing a 67 marker or 111, IMO. A 37 marker test is the least to do for genealogy. FTDNA doesn't always do upgrade sales for the 67 and 111, just so you know! Family Tree DNA <http://www.familytreedna.com/> wrote to all their Project Administrators: Since last summer's upgrade sale was such huge success, we thought we'd repeat history! Project Administrators like you played a very important role in last year's success by broadcasting the sale to project members. As your project members upgrade, the resolution of results and comparisons we provide greatly improves. So, please spread the word and we'll make this year's upgrade sale even bigger! >From June 12, 2013 through June 19, 2013, we will reduce the following prices. Y-DNA 12 to 25 was $49 Now $35 Y-DNA 12 to 37 was $99 Now $69 Y-DNA 12 to 67 was $189 Now $148 Y-DNA 25 to 37 was $49 Now $35 Y-DNA 25 to 67 was $148 Now $114 Y-DNA 25 to 111 was $249 Now $224 Y-DNA 37 to 67 was $99 Now $79 Y-DNA 37 to 111 was $220 Now $188 Y-DNA 67 to 111 was $129 Now $109 To order an upgrade at these special prices your members can log into their personal pages with their kit number and password. Click on the "Order Upgrade" button located on the right side of the menu bar. Then click on the "Special Offers" button. ALL ORDERS MUST BE PLACED AND PAID FOR BY 11:59 p.m., JUNE 19, 2013, TO RECEIVE THE SALE PRICE. Enjoy! Emily If you do not hear from me in a timely manner, just write again...I was buried in email. Things are new at familysearch.org. You do not have to register, but then your searches are limited. The web browsers will not all work on the website and this is the usually the problem. I am getting by with Internet Explorer and my AOL account, but really need to upgrade. Once you are on the website hit the search tab for researching and this will take you to the familiar page you have probably used before. If you have any other questions email me or give me a call and I will try to walk you through the site. Sue LeBlanc 503-659-4221
I am trying to use familysearch.org, but having trouble accessing it. What is the deal about establishing an account? I did fill out the requested stuff, but now cannot seem to use it? Is this a new procedure? Pat Burling

Betty Gibson, our Thursday morning volunteer at the GFO library, has resigned her position, and there is an immediate need to fill this opening. Some of the duties of an RA are: Welcoming patrons into the library, answering the phone, helping patrons with their research, and shelving books. For a complete description of the duties, go to our website, www.gfo.org and click on Volunteer. We need to have at least two volunteers on duty for each shift to keep the library open. Please consider volunteering one day per week, one day every two weeks, or one day per month. Thanks in advance, Cathy Lauer Volunteer Coordinator volunteer@gfo.org
Greetings, Beverly Walker has sent me the following information regarding 23andMe: 23andMe will do a DNA test for anyone that has Parkinson's Disease. They received I believe $ 1 million grant to test Parkinson's patients. If I understand what they are doing, they are doing the tests and will try to develop tests and results for those who have Parkinson's. On the website put in "23andMe.com and Parkinson's" and get more information. ---- Thank you Beverly. I have heard that 23andMe is trying to get a patent on the genes for Parkinson's. Best wishes, Emily

Hello Map Lovers, We will be working again on the GFO map collection on Sunday starting at 9:00. Come when you can. Help is needed. We will continue our cataloging on the GFO laptop computers along with sorting more of the maps. Also, we have a new box of maps to sort that came in with the Bradford Donation. See you Sunday, 2 June. doris
Greetings! Although the July 27th meeting will be on chromosome browsing, do NOT download your raw data from Family Tree DNA until I give you notice that Build 37 is complete. If you tested at 23andMe, do download to an Excel file any new matches you have and combine them in one file. If you need to test more people, FTDNA will have a Fathers Day Sale and no doubt it will include Family Finder as well as the Y tests and probably some upgrades on the Y. These are my educated guesses. See you July 27th at the GFO Library from 10 to noon. Bring a laptop or put your files on a flash drive and commandeer a computer at the front of the room. Get there early to do this as the general patrons may need them and would tend to use the ones in the front. I will be willing to meet with any of you who have questions on the three types of tests (Y, atDNA and mtDNA) after noon on July 27 in the hall of the GFO library. BTW, Ill be speaking at the Highland Games again this year, if any of you are going. It is always the basics of DNA testing. Ive been asked to do a ½ day seminar on DNA in August at GFO. Sign up for it and me some topics you would like covered by the end of June. Thanks, Emily If you do not hear from me in a timely manner, just write again...I was buried in email. Jan, Great Questions. I have never thought of asking any veteran organizations for this information. But I do know that each one has a paid employee called a "Veterans Service R epresentative " and that they are available here in Portland. The phone number for the American Legion is 503.412.4771; DAV 503.412.4750; VFW 503.412.4757; Paralyzed Veterans of America 503.412.4762; and the Military Order of the Purple Heart 503.412.4770 .
