Hi, Yes this family research is pretty hilarious sometimes! I have found several ancestors who were exumed and reburied elsewhere. Sometimes I wish my ancestors would not be moving around long after they died! One cemetery thought one of them was still there when they weren't! I had to prove to them otherwise so they ended up with egg on their face! :-] They did correct their records though. Nathan
A friend's mother had her name carved on the stone with her first husband in MA, then she remarried. She was buried with her second husband in Nova Scotia. Isn't genealogy fun???? Hi all, What if you find the same person buried in 2 cemeteries like I did?! I had to wonder if they cut him in half and buried in him in two places to settle a family dispute over him or something?! I went all the way over to Clatskanie, near the Oregon Coast to the Clatskanie City Hall and finally found out that the Clatskanie cemetery people list plot owners and people buried there as one and the same so you do not have to be dead to appear to be dead in their records! My Great Granduncle died in 1921 and his family had him buried in Portland and he still owns a grave plot in Clatskanie to this day. Their old records make no distinction as to whether a person was buried there or if they just bought a plot, so it appears that he is buried there, and he ended up being listed as buried there, in a Clatskanie cemetery index, but he has a grave stone in Rose City Cemetery. :-] Mystery solved. Nathan
Matt and Mattie in our family was Martha. Patsy was another great-grandma's baby girl who died...I thought....until I got his death certificate and changed his name to Patrick and his sex to male. Daddy was Irish and that is a common diminutive for both Patrick and Patricia by the Irish. I spent the weekend looking for Bridget or Briget Henderhin... or Handerhin... or Handerhan, Henderhon, etc....any combinations of vowels you can possibly think of. And that's not considering the Handrahuns , etc., ect. I even tried looking up the family by finding her children but every time Bridget married the children's name surname changed. One man divorced her and left with their older child and she changed the baby's name back to her previous husband's name. Then she evidently remarried and the children took on that father's name. Aaarrghhhhh!!! And if I may add to your message, Dave, I don't feel it is wrong to remind even seasoned researchers about mis-naming persons. My husband' father and two brothers were listed as females in on census - Matthew, Francis, and Joseph were Mattie, Frances, and Josephine DUNWALTZ for DUNWALD. When searching and you can't get a hit, you try different spellings, e.g., changing "n"s to "u"s. Then you get the idea, hey, maybe he or she was living with an in-law. Well, this didn't work either. What did work? Darlene Dowhaniuk found one of my missing relatives by searching on the wife's maiden name. Low and behold - his last name had been changed to hers! (Maybe their 3 year old son told the mixed up Census Taker the wrong name...) Just another "Believe it or not" in the annals of Genealogy, to me. Dave Witthans P.S. I know that Valentine will chastise me and say its "in the 'New-bie' site!". If this method was listed there, I will join any site Valentine commands. (Gosh, I hope not.) P.P.S. Thanks again, Darlene.
Late as usual, but this is just a reminder that the Round Table will meet Monday night (November 22) at the Forum Library, at 6:30 pm. Come, bring your brick-wall problems, genealogical questions, or your genealogical experience, and share them with others. Julie Kidd
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The Genealogical Forum of Oregon has scheduled an Heirloom Show on February 19, 1005. The location is secured, and the presenter, Harvey Stelle is on board, however, we do not have an Heirloom Show MANAGER. This popular event will be CANCELLED unless some person or persons step forward as Manager. That person must be enlisted by DECEMBER 1st. Here is what needs doing before the event: - Prepare and organize publicity for the Insider and GFO Website. -Send out press release notices to area newspapers. -Develop and distribute a flyer about the Heirloom Show. -Coordinate information about the heirlooms that are part of the show the with presenter, Harvey Steele. -On the day of the event, heirlooms need to be tagged and displayed. -Take notes during the event as Harvey Steele explains the heirloom value and gives estimates. -See that the heirlooms get back to the owner. Past Heirloom Shows have been fun for all who participated. So, listen up folks, someone needs to step up to the bar and take on the show management by December 1st. Contact Jan Robinson at [email protected] or any board member.
Hello Everyone, Just a reminder that the Roots Users Group will be having their monthly meeting in the Higgins room this coming Saturday (Nov. 20th) starting at 9:30 AM. The presentation will be an introduction to the chart making features available in the Master Genealogist software program. It will cover chart types, data selection filters and output types. A chart will be designed to be printed by the chart printing service of Wholly Genes Software, the author of The Master Genealogist. (That chart will be shown at the January meeting). Also, if time allows, a demonstration will be made of actually pasting together a large chart from many small pages. The meeting will be divided into the initial presentation, a short business meeting, then final demonstrations, questions and answers. The meeting is open to all...members and non-members alike. For those that don't use the software program, it will be a good chance to see what this feature has to offer. Hi Everyone Just wanted to send out a reminder that our Irish Interest Group meets this coming Saturday. The meeting will be held in the Higgins Room at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. It begins at 1:00 p.m.
Thanks To Kristy and several others here are two possibilities for any one else looking for these. **** Hi Janice, I remember those too. I looked on the 'Net and found two addresses...both in Florida but different: My favorite company is The Skeleton Closet, where the forms are designed for genealogists by a genealogist. Contact them at PO Box 780427, Orlando, FL 32878-0427. The Skeleton Closet, 636 Magnolia Drive, Maitland, FL 32751 (407-332-1991) I figure that means 1) they have two addresses; or 2) one of those addresses is the right one; or 3) both of those addresses are so old they don't count. Then I found an ad for this Conference that was this weekend: 2004 FSGS Conference: November 12-13! Have you registered yet? http://www.rootsweb.com/~flsgs/ Skeleton Closet will be there It said that, among the display/sales tables would be "Skeleton Closet"... so maybe they are still in business. You might try any or all of the addresses to see if you can track them down. Kristy **** The other thought I & a friend had was to take my filled out PAF forms lay them on the photo copier side by side and shrink them, cut apart and punch. Presto instant ready to go with the latest information to the library in the small size format. Thanks all for the help. Janice M. Healy Co-compiler of "Oregon Burial Site Guide" Aloha, Oregon U.S.A. Janice, Everton's used to print them, too, but they're out of business now. Pity. Years ago I used to put two FGS (filled out) on a printer and shrink them to half size and then cut them in half. One year before a trip to Salt Lake City I did that with about a hundred of them because I didn't want to rewrite them onto the expensive little forms. Laziness is the mother of invention! Of course I had to hole-punch all of them but I had more time than money. Carole
Hi, does any one know if the Skeleton Closet is still in existence? They used to sell forms etc for small notebooks to take to the library, 5.5 X 8.5 sheets. These were very useful, I haven't seen them at the conference for a while. There old address doesn't come up in AnyWho.com so I suspect they are no more, but figured it doesn't hurt to ask. Trying to get back to my long neglected genealogy. Thanks Janice M. Healy Co-compiler of "Oregon Burial Site Guide" Aloha, Oregon U.S.A. Reminder, the Computer Interest Group of the GFO will meet Monday night at the Forum at 7:00. The topic will be making gifts with your computer. Share your experiences, and learn from others. Marty Krauter
Hi Carole, Thanks. Now I see. I didn't even notice the arrow indicator late last night at the bottom of the pages. I must have been more tired then I thought. So that opens up the pension files and/or other related papers! Wow! This is really something. Thank you much, Nathan
My Amos Hooker had several pages, including a letter certifying his marriage, and one of his service and death and still another showing that his wife got her widow's pension. Thee are little arrows at the bottom of the page if there is more. Good luck and have fun! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nathan Haines Sr." <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 14, 2004 12:08 AM Subject: [GFO] Heritage Quest > Carole, > It is midnight and Heritage Quest is back on line. > I got into that Revolutionary site addition you > mentioned and found my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather Francis > Berry listed. Carole, It is midnight and Heritage Quest is back on line. I got into that Revolutionary site addition you mentioned and found my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather Francis Berry listed. There is not much to it. I guess the # on the card indicates what Regiment they served in, do you think? Nathan
I haven't been able to get on Heritage Quest today because they've been working on their website. Still can't get on the census part but in just the last hour they have added Rev. War images. Hot diggity-dawg!

Ms. Scheer, somehow, asked me to post a query for her in May 1998. (I don't really know her and cannot remember how I came to hear from her.) I just received an answer about her family. I would share it with her if I knew how to find her. I have a very vague recollection that she was from "west of the city"...perhaps Hillsboro, perhaps not. Please email me if you know her. Thanks, Kristy
