Under the first heading "History and Biography and Literature"........you will find a database for the "Times Digital Archive"......The London Times from 1785 to 1985......so if you were ever curious or needed to know something from this time frame......please go to it...........I tried it and it works!!! It even shows pictures!! Also under this heading is "History Resource Center - US".......maps.......states......a lot of good stuff. Under the second heading "General Knowledge".........they have "Info Trace on File"............a collection of books. etc. Anyway.......it will have these 30 databases open for just this week so explore them when you can during this short time frame...... please go and see if anything will interest you.......you can copy so take down what you may need for your family history research........ Good Luck...........Jan
Hello Everyone, Hopefully everyone has a ballot now and has either voted or getting ready to vote. First, Jeanette Hopkins has agreed to be a write-in candidate for the co-treasurer position. Jeanette is very qualified for the position and will do a great job. So, please write her in. Secondly, if you only received one ballot and there are more than one of you as members, please either make a copy of the ballot, put your membership # on the ballots and mail in, or both of you can vote on the same ballot by putting slash marks on your choice and putting your membership # on the ballot and mail in. Hopefully, that is understandable. We are sorry for the inconvenience of receiving only one ballot when there are multiple members in the household. Please remember to return your ballot by Monday, May 2. Thank you. Cindy Webb
Hi All, The TV station UNP 49 will be taping a short segment in our library this Thursday, April 14th from 10:30 until 11:00 am. I'd like to invite, encourage, cajole, etc. all of you to come on down to show the TV folks and the audience what an exciting place we are to do research in! This is a great boon to our organization in helping to expose our library to the greater Portland area (and it doesn't cost us anything). Please come on down on Thursday morning to help show what we are all about! Jan, R-334

We are privileged tohave Pat Baars present the program for the up-coming general membership meeting of the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. Her talk, titled "They Must Have Come from Somewhere: Finding the Where and Why of Migration" will begin at 2:00 pm. Saturday, April 9, 2005 at the Forum Library, 1505 SE Gideon St. in Portland. Pat is a gifted speaker, instructor, and professional researcher who will undoubtedly entice you to check further on your ever migrating ancestors. Join us Saturday, April 9th and get a "leg up" on your wandering (purposefully) predecessors. They knew where they were going and why and now we want to know as well. So, where did Grandma live? Satellite pictures of neighborhoods, in color, are available! However, there is this Alert! Google worked fine a couple of times, BUT, as I discovered, it is in BETA testing. BETA means it is not quite ready for "prime time". Google is still working out all the bugs involved with so many combinations of operating systems and browsers. Unfortunately, "buyer beware"... My system hung up several times, requiring painful re-boots... I find that when you go to Google, do nothing until the web-page settles down. Then enlarge, if you have to. Otherwise, if you mess with the page too quickly, the screen map image will be condensed. At the top left there are <- -> arrows which allow you to maneuver the map in all four directions. Below those arrows is a "barometer" which allows you to zoom in or out, with the minus sign going towards the moon, and the plus sign zooming in towards the earth. Also, sorry to say, the maps are NOT of the whole USA. Probably just the major population centers. I tried Heber Springs, Arkansas, and it politely said that it cannot zoom in as close as the street map displayed. It said, though, to keep trying at a further distance. Eventually the color pic came thru, but it was not desirable... If you look at Chicago, the image covers a rectangle of 8 blocks: in the southwest side of Chicago, of 2 blocks north and south by 4 blocks east and west. For example, at closest range, the photo shows 30th to 32nd and Halsted to Normal. On my monitor it covers a screen area of about 5.5 by 8.5 inches. You can see what the neighborhood looks like from the sky in color, altho it is mostly on the dark side. I don't know when the pics were made, but my home was photographed over a year ago. (I saw a car in my driveway that was sold in January of 2004, after being there several years.) Thanks to an old friend, Valentine, for this tip: http://maps.google.com/ When you get to the site, enter your: "City, ST" in quotes and press Search. Then use the arrows and the +/- for honing in on your target. You may also left click and move the map around. That normal looking map can be useful, but if you click on Satellite in the upper right hand corner, you will get the color picture. ALSO, you can print it and/or e-mail it! Thanks again, Valentine. The GFO Writers' Forum meets the second Monday of each month. Our next meeting is this coming Monday, April 11th, from 7 to 9 pm at the GFO Library. Come and share your writing or get inspired to write, if you find yourself stuck in neutral! Peggy Baldwin 503-281-0250
List Mom, I seem to have misplace the directions for Subscribing and unsubscribing. Would you please be kind enough to publish them again. Thanks, Eugene
As the FGS delegate for the Genealogical Forum of Oregon I want to remind you of the FGS conference in September to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. The dates are the 7th to the 10th. There will be several of our members and friends going to the conference. It would be nice to know who plans on going. I am willing to keep a list with email addresses. If you are then looking for someone to share a room with, we might be able to help. The Marriott downtown is the host hotel. For additional hotels and information please visit the FGS website at fgs.org. Sue LeBlanc [email protected]

The Sept 1931 ordinance (really short, but it's on the Multnomah Co GenWeb page at www.rootsweb.com/~ormultno/land/ord61325.htm) authorizing the renumbering also standardized the SE, SW, NE, NW, and N designation that streets have today. Earlier they usually gave addresses as "200 East 12th N" to differentiate it from "200 East 12th S." As I recall, in the pre-1932 city directories, the street name was alphabetized as though "East" was the first word in the street name. But that was only for streets that extended across the NESW lines. Downtown streets were all plain (no S) "200 12th", but the ones above Burnside on the west side of the river were designated as "200 12th N." I guess this is why the standardization was a very good thing. Must have been a mess to live with! Julie Kidd
Here is what I found in the Portland City Directories at the GFO. The 1933 Portland City Directory for the address section of 946 Milwaukie Arilla Peyton and Mrs. Bernita Richter were living at that address. The 1934 Portland City directory has no 3 digit residences on Milwaukie. There is no Arilla Peyton in the alphabetical name pages. Bernita Richter is living at 4636 SE Milwaukie. I cannot prove that this is the same address as the previous 946 Milwaukie residence. I think that this address, 4636, is most likely the same residence as 946 was. I tried to use a 1912 City Directory to see who was living at 946 Milwaukie. (Note the absence of SE.) I could look that up if I had the name of the person you know were there then. I found that the early directories were alphabetical by the residents names but did not seem to also be arranged by address as more recent directories were. I hope this has helped. Hi Daraleen, Thanks for the info. That was sure nice of you to check. I was thinking that it might be that when Carl first died in 1931 that they were thinking about burying him in Macksburg and told the paper that and then changed their minds and had him buried in Canby? I have seen that happen before. Nathan --- [email protected] wrote: > > . . She said that her Grandparents are buried in the Zion Cemetery in Canby dw says: I checked Carl's death certificate this morning when I was at the Archives and it also says he was buried at Zion Cemetery in Canby. S. A Miller, Aurora was the funeral director. Daraleen
Hi, Thanks for reminding me about the Canby Funeral home. I have not done that yet. I am getting ready to go to work so the fun is over for now. I may get time to call them tomorrow before I leave for work Tues.
