Are divorce records part of public record? I am trying to help a young woman in her 40's find out who her real father is. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I am thinking of Clark, Multnomah, or Clackamas county. Thank you, Marjorie
The All-Nighter for this quarter will begin on Saturday, May 21st. Research in the Forum's Library from 6pm on Saturday night to 6am Sunday morning. Take advantage of this great opportunity to delve into your research--read through those un-indexed periodicals; explore the wonders of the Forum's microfiche cabinet; fill in that missing data on those allied ancestors. The addition of the wonderful new (and fast!) Internet connection in the library, just helps facilitate your research. Cost for the event is $15, and includes snacks and a midnight pizza party. Space is limited and first-come, first-served. Sending a check to the Forum will reserve your place. Directions to the Forum can be found on the website, at http://www.gfo.org/directions.htm If anyone has questions please contact me directy rather than responding to the list. Hope to see some of you there! Julie Kidd [email protected]
Gerry Lenzen stepped up to the bar and we are in for a treat with his presentation "Footprints of Our Ancestors" - the process and trail of records we can use to find the locality of origin for our European ancestors when we gather for the general membership meeting, Saturday, May 14, 2005, 2 pm at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon library, 1505 SE Gideon, Portland. Gerry was born in Glidden, Wisconsin and came west with his parents in 1941. After graduating from Portland State University, he worked for the Bonneville Power Administration for 32 plus years. He is a dedicated professional researcher, and gifted lecturer locally, regionally and nationally. Gerry continues to support the Forum on the Endowment Committee, Education Committee and reading room staff. Be ready to discover more ways to make the research journey successful as we learn about new record types and obscure resources. We may have to learn new skills in reading other languages, however, only a rudimentary language ability is necessary to comprehend important information. So, circle Saturday, May 14th and join us at the Forum library, 2 pm as we pursue our sometimes elusive ancestors. Patricia S. Burling Education Committee
The GFO Writers' Forum meets the second Monday of each month. Our next meeting is this coming Monday, May 9th, from 7 to 9 pm at the GFO Library. Come and share your writing or get inspired to write, if you find yourself stuck in neutral! This will be the last meeting until we start up again in September. We'll have a send off, with ideas about how to keep those writing juices going during the summer. Peggy Baldwin 503-281-0250
Dear JGS Oregon Friends, JGSO Board Member Joan Teller asked me to relay this important message to you. Ron Doctor JGSO Membership Chairman ---------------------------------------------------------------- URGENT CALL TO ACTION FROM YAD VASHEM: REGISTER NAMES OF HOLOCAUST VICTIMS WHO PERISHED As the world memorializes Shoah victims on the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII, we are witness to the rapid end of the generation of Holocaust survivors. As this generation passes, so passes the memory of the millions of Shoah victims who are yet to be recorded. As leaders of Jewish institutions, who have the ability to reach into the Jewish community, we have an obligation to urge those who possess the memory to share those names for future generations. Yad Vashem's Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names - now available anywhere in the world at www.yadvashem.org Memorializes and preserves the legacy of each individual Jew who died at the hands of the Nazis and their collaborators. A revolutionary milestone in Holocaust remembrance, this site provides an opportunity to search for names, photographs and brief histories of over three million Holocaust victims who died because they were Jewish. A singularly unique resource in scope, content and accessibility, the Database also allows users to submit names, photos and documents on-line. Join the worldwide 11th hour campaign to gather names of all victims of the Holocaust. As many names are still missing, those who have information on victims that are not in listed in the Database are urgently requested to submit them. This year, we you call upon Jewish communities taking part in the "Unto Every Person There is a Name" program, to continue to collect names as you have in the past, but to use this unprecedented opportunity to incorporate the Database into the names collection effort. To submit names on-line via the website go to www.yadvashem.org - click "The Central Database of Shoah Victim's Names" and click Submit New Names on the search page. * Use of the database is free of charge To submit names via the paper form, known as a Page of Testimony, either copy the sample form and instructions that are attached to this letter (they should be reproduced for multiple submissions.) Or download them at: http://www1.yadvashem.org/download/index_download.html Forms may also be ordered from Yad Vashem: via e-mail: [email protected] Tel: +972-2-6443582 or Fax: +972-2-6443579 A general bulletin and guide for activities using the Database is available at: http://www1.yadvashem.org/remembrance/names/site/User_Guides.html For additional ideas and assistance in this effort contact: [email protected] More information about the Database is available at: http://www1.yadvashem.org/remembrance/names/site/home_names.html Of the millions who have visited the website from 175 countrie since the Database was launched in November 2004, thousands of people have written moving personal accounts of how they reconnected with the past or discovered a part of their history they did not know. "The Database allowed my family in the United States to discover family who survived that now live in Jerusalem," wrote Bob Korren from New York. "This is a powerful site which commemorates those who perished an also allows long lost family to reconnect." In February, 2005 two sisters, separated in October 1944 in the Budapest ghetto in Hungary, were reunited after 61 years as a result of a search of the Yad Vashem Names Database conducted by the granddaughter of one of the sisters. To see the full story click: http://www1.yadvashem.org/about_yad/what_new/data_whats_new/06.02.05.html On behalf of Yad Vashem, thank you for helping to ensure that every Holocaust victim has a place in our collective memory.

I forgot to add a big thank you to: Cindy Webb, Elizabeth Boyd, Sue LeBlanc, and I'm sure that there are still others whose I've forgotten to name. Jan, R-334
Hi All, I hope that each of you that came out to the seminar today enjoyed themselves. A special thank you goes to the speaker, Chuck Knuthson, and to Leland Meitzler, or Heritage Creations. A huge thank you goes to all the Forum members who attended the seminar and an extra special pat on the back to the following: Harold Kelly, Bill and Shirley Durkheimer, Jane Olson, Ann Wendlant, Bettina Chew, Sandy Whiteman, Connie and Gerry Lenzen, Leslie Lawson, Michele Fricke, Larry Sullivan, Lyleth Winther, Cathy Lauer, April Ober, Pat Burling, Andy Davidson, CR Hanna, Byron Blankenship, and many, many others who helped out. If I've forgotten your name it is not because your help wasn't appreciated, but is more related to the fact that I was up awfully early for a person who doesn't really "do" mornings. For those that missed the seminar, the church was lovely and parking was a breeze! Plus I think that each of us learned some new methods to get us over those brick walls! Jan, R-334

My cousin Leslie Eakin was md to Salena Ella Ellsworth B-22 Oct 1881, died early 1920 of childbirth, when her 2nd son was born, she was dau/o Benjamin F. and Salena Maupin Ellsworth. when Leslie died he had no issue, & I was given a lot of old pictures. I identified the Eakin part of the pictures, but I have a lot of pictures, that I presume were from Salena's side of the family. Mostly unidentified, but I would like to give them to that part of the family. I do not believe in selling this type of momento to flea mkts. If there is anyone out there who belongs to this family. Please write me. Emma Jean SEakin Smith
I was working as research assistant today and a member called with that very same question. I checked and was told, registration will be accepted at the seminar starting at 8 am. But, you might plan to bring your lunch unless someone who knows more than I do emails a reply to you arranging a sandwich for you. <grin> Maggie ----- Original Message ----- From: "clgibson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 26, 2005 8:01 PM Subject: [GFO] GFO Spring Seminar > Ack! Hi All, For those of you who are attending the 2005 GFO Spring Seminar this Saturday I'm looking for a crew to help set-up and tear-down with the materials that Leland Meitzler from Heritage Quest is bringing. I'll have more details if you email me, or you can just call me Wednesday between 10:30 am and 3 pm at the Forum. Jan R, R-334
Hall of Fame Award Nominations Due The Hall of Fame is a way to honor members who perform outstanding services to the Forum. Nominees need to be active in more than one facet of the Forum over a long period of time. They should be leaders who have made a significant difference helping to bring the Forum to the place of excellence it is today. These nominees should be remarkable in special ways. This honor is only presented when it is appropriate. Our last recipient was Irene Little in 2001. To nominate a candidate, please outline the candidate's services to the Forum and the reasons why this candidate should be considered for this honor. This outline should be given to Michele Fricke, Membership by Friday, May 27, 2005. If you need further information, please contact Michele at 503-312-0808.
Will we be able to drop off writing contest entries at the seminar this weekend, or should we just mail them? Matthew
This came in on another list that I belong to. The government has done a good job of compiling some of this information. And there are individuals and museums on the internet attempting to save the information for future generations. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ndlpedu/collections/fsa/history.html
Changes happen. And the GFO is no exception. We currently have some job positions to fill to make our organization run successfully and professionally! The Print Shop Supervisor (aka Publisher), Membership Chair, and Volunteer Coordinator positions need some enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to come forward. Please let us know if you can give some time and service to our organization either by working on a committee or serving in one of these open positions. More information will be provided at the Spring Seminar; the job descriptions will be listed at the Forum and there has been information provided in the Insider newsletter. Contact Jan Robinson, Gerry Lenzen, or Michele Fricke at [email protected] We appreciate your support.
