Is there any one on the list that is in Baker Co.? I am trying to help a friend locate a lost grandfather. James A. CONNER Died: 7 Dec 1882 Baker Co. in or near Baker City. He was a miner and we were able a few years ago to locate his mining claims at the court house. We were not able to locate the probate records that have been cited as sources in someone else's work, unfortunately. So we have to trust that they have the date of death right. We think he may be buried in the Wingville Cemetery also known as the Wingville IOOF Cemetery does anyone know where we might find a reading of this cemetery? Or someone that I can write to for information? Thanks folks, Janice Janice M. Healy Co-compiler of "Oregon Burial Site Guide" Aloha, Oregon U.S.A. For those of you that volunteer at the GFO library, I have a question. There is a dot matrix printer in the office loaded with continuous feed paper. If you have used this printer in the past, for an application that is still current, please tell me. The office is going to be rearranged, and this printer is going into storage. If you know of a pertinent ongoing application for this printer, speak up, or... Thanks, Rex -- "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming...'Wow! What a ride!'"
Please join us for the next Canadian SIG meeting on Sunday, May 22, 1-2:30 PM in the Higgins Room at GFO. The topic will be "Migration Patterns". We have received some Canadian resources books that will be for sale at this meeting. This meeting was previously scheduled over Memorial Day weekend so it will be a week earlier. Please spread the word! Michele
Hello Sydney, Well, we might be connected back there somewhere but we may never find the connection and I do not know of one to the Haines that you mentioned. My Haines tree came from Aynhoe of Ye Hill, Northamptonshire, Eng. I have yet to study England to know what is where in that country. Thanks for asking. Sometimes you are surprised at the paths your research take you down. Someone asked me a few months ago if I am related to Myra Weston who owned and edited the Canby Herald Newspaper for a very long time. They told me her middle name was Haines. I was so suprised to here that Myra's middle name was Haines I couldn't believe it. I was born and grew up in Canby, OR. If Myra had known she was related to my Haines family I am sure she would have said something to my mother who she knew real well. I got to studying Myra's tree and traced her all the was back to my tree. The Richard Haines who left England in 1683 with his family died on the ship on the way here. Right after he died his wife gave birth to their 6th child! I am descended from Richard's 4th child. Myra Weston I found out is descended from that 6th child, Joseph, who was born on the ship at sea! Talk about a small world, that two people related that far back would both end up in the small town of Canby, OR of all places. Who would have thunk it? Anyway, we might be related, but I am not sure. There was a book written many years ago called Richard Haines and his descendants. It is a pretty well known book. I discovered that a book company reprinted that book and I got a copy of it on cd. If you would like to tell me the name of your Haines that came to America in the 1600's I could check the index of this Haines history bok that I have to see if they are listed in it, ok? My Grandfather Morton Haines had a sister Sidney who lived in IN, where my Grandfather came from. Nathan --- "Sydney H. Hi Loretta, I do not know of a single person with the Haynes spelling connected to my tree. I have heard tell that some people think the Haines spelling was the original spelling and Haynes was a mispelled variation of the name and others seem to think the Haynes spelling was the original spelling. I don't know if anyone has ever proved one way or the other or ever will? There are several files on Ancestry.com about your Jacob Haynes, none of which say who Jacob's father was. That is too bad. He would have to be traced back quite a ways to see who else he is related to. My Haines tree traces through Qauker records all the way back to 1683 when my 9th Gr Grandfather came to America from England. I guess that makes me about as American as you can get witout being of Indian descent. The family settled in NJ and none of the family ever had the spelling with a Y in it. I see from files on the web that Jacob is buried in Pullman, WA and that he died in 1880. I did not see him on the 1880 census so I suspect he died right before that census? Did you ever do a search for an obit for him that MIGHT say who his father was? Or, a search for an Estate file and/or Will? Hi Nathan, Many times I have seen your names on messages and wondered if you are related to Jacob HAYNES, Sr. who married Sally/Sarah Ann SHUCK in 1844. Their son, Jacob HAYNES, Jr. married Sarah Ann LIVENGOOD in 1868, Yamhill County. The Shucks and Livengoods are on my father's side. What is a Family History Center? Family History Centers are branch facilities of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Centers provide access to most of the microfilms and microfiche in the Family History Library to help patrons identify their ancestors. Most centers are located in meetinghouses of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Centers are administered and operated by local Church members. Everyone is welcome to come to the centers and use Family History Center resources. penelope
Thanks, Nathan and everyone else who wrote to me. I was hoping to find that the LDS had filmed the earliest Oregon death certificates and placed them in our local FHCs as they did with Washington's. It is so nice to be able to get an on-the-spot death certificate. It would also be very handy to be able to go to the LDS library for the marriage records of both states since my people at the turn of the previous century were getting married in both states. Thanks again! Carole
Hi, I have not had much luck finding WA marriage records. The Gresham FHC has a WA marriage index but it is on microfiche and it does not start until 1968. Oregon death certificates over 50 years old are all kept at the State Archives in Salem. You can get them for 25 cents there. There is an on-line OR death index that covers deaths in OR from 1903 to 1998. Just type Oregon death index into Google Search Engine and it will bring up the link to get you to that OR death index. OR marriage records are difficult to hunt down. Maybe not as hard as WA records though. The Forum has the State of OR marriage index on microfilm. It only covers from around 1905 to about the mid 1920s or something like that. There is a huge gap in the OR marriage index that is missing. There is no State marriage index from the 1920s to the 1960s or something like that. The Forum has the State marriage index on microfiche for the newer OR marriages. A lot of libraries have what there is of the OR marriage indexes at their libraries. Otherwise you just have to contact a County office and see if they will check their records for you as far as I know. There are a lot of marriage index books at various places. The Forum has a lot of marriage index books for various years for various counties in OR. In a perfect world there would be an on-line marriage index site for everyone in the world from Adam and Eve until now! :-] You probably noticed already that we are not in a perfect world. Good luck finding marriages in OR and WA. An index of Oregon marriages, 1925-1945 is being created by a crew of GFO extractors. This will be published on CDs. Last I heard, the GFO workers had passed 1930 and probably have about enough to put on a CD. However, if you know the exact date of a marriage, you can probably get a copy ($$) from the Oregon Vital Statistics office here in Portland. If you don't have the exact date, the vital statistics clerks cannot do a search for you. There are barely enough clerks to keep up on storing the current new marriages records. Now that we've established that WA death records are only a short walk away at the local LDS FHC....where can I find the WA marriage records? Are they also on film in the LDS library, aka FHC? How about the OR deaths and marriages? Thanks, Carole

Distance is relevant to where you are. Thanks for letting everyone know about this find and I am closer to the Washington location. If there are others out there that know of a location, it might help someone else in another area. thanks again. Yikes - of course, LDS and FHC are connected. They are just not one and the same. That's what I was trying to tell you because you seemed to be inferring that LDS and FHC are one and the same, and they are not. Sorry if I confused you. I won't send any more messages on this subject! And I'm not even a member of the church. MStang
Hi Carole, You are welcome. The Gresham FHC has pretty limited hours. They are only open tue-thur 10-9 and Sat 10-2. They used to be open on Fri but not anymore. They are real nice and helpful there. They have a computer room now too but I have not ever used that.
