    3. In case some of you are interested, the California Birth index is back at Ancestry.com. It does not give father's and mother's first names but does give mothers surname. Have not heard why it is back (or how long it is likely to stay). Clyde Senger

OHS is pretty stuffy about their material in my dealings with them. They have to make copies and are expensive. much stuff is in stacks not available to see without worker getting it for you. Photos are hard to get to and expensive to copy. Just not user friendly place. They claim they are keeper of oreg historical treasures and must protect them, and for the real treasures I agree, but their definition of treasures different than mine. I did a lot of Oregon Trail research 4 years ago and many of their treaures I asked for copies of were copies of originals. and they put them through fast feed copier. I was member for many years but quit in recent times.

    3. The University of Oregon Knight Library is the location of the Oregon Newspaper microfilm project, and has the best collection of Oregon newspapers. For those close enough to visit, the microfilm is arranged alphabetically by city, so you don't have to know the name of the paper. AND they will interlibrary loan the microfilm. Ask your local library to request your interlibrary loan from University of Oregon Knight Library, Eugene, Oregon. Specify city (and state), and date range you are interested in. 1. [GFO] High Speed Monday June 20th.
    2. Marty & Kathy Krauter
    3. On Monday, June 20th, The Computer Interest Group presents: High Speed Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Not one, but two I.T. professionals will present how to upgrade from Dial-Up to High Speed. One is proficient in DSL hookups, the other in Cable. I anticipate we'll talk about what is needed to get from where you might be to there, what you need, what it will cost, etc. And I hope to have some discussions on what security options to consider with High Speed connections, as they are fertile ground for miscreants. This meeting would be good for anyone considering upgrading. It would also be good for anyone wanting to know what other people are using for software protection and what their experiences have been. If you have any special topics that you would like to see covered let us know. The meeting is a week from Monday. Hope to see you at the Forum. Marty Krauter

    1. Big SNOW of 1950
    2. Remembering the big Snow of 1950 I remember the big snow in 1950 - I lived in the Columbia Gorge (Stevenson, WA.) with my parents and my 2 "Ugly" twin brothers. The snow had drifted so high we could climb on the roof of the house and the trains were frozen to the rail road train tracks. I have photos of that snow. I remember is was fun--but cold and lots of water when it thawed-the celler-basement flooded. Penny penelope

    1. Re: [GFO] Big snow of 1968?
    2. Our family had a baby during the big snow storm. She was born December 31, 1968. I remember that they lived on NE 15th and Knott, and Mike tried to drive to Emmanuel Hospital...couldn't make it...got stuck...and they had to walk in the last bit. It took several days for the car to be available again if I recall correctly. But they got a great baby girl out of it all! I also recall a major ice storm. It must have been early January of 1979. We had moved in the summer of 1978 and had a side yard with a magnificent weeping willow that took up the majority of a buildable lot. I loved it. Then came the ice storm. I think I remember being "in" for the great part of a week, no school, etc. The tree was badly broken by the storm and I had to have it "trimmed." When I next saw the tree there were two or three major branches and one twig. Literally! I almost cried. But, of course, it soon "grew like a weed" and was back to its old self. Kristy
