The GFO has set up a new mailing list group at https://groups.io/g/ORForum. We will be sending an invitation to join the new group to all current subscribers of the Rootsweb group. When you receive the invitation, you can join one of two ways: Reply to the emailed invitation. You will get two responses – one from Groups.io (unless you already have an account) and the other from orforum@groups.io<mailto:orforum@group.io>). If you do not get a response, check your spam folder. The other way to join is to go to the website (https://groups.io/g/ORForum) and click on the blue “Join This Group” button near the bottom of the page. Once logged in, you can choose how you want to receive messages. You can also go to the account settings—a drop down item under your name in the upper right corner – and opt in and out of various options. You can stick with the defaults, but if you are curious about all of your options there is a short YouTube video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI4SmVlInCc . You can then start a new topic or reply to an older one. You can also post a message by sending an email to orforum@groups.io<mailto:orforum@groups.io>. You need to know that this is a public forum, as was ORForum. That means that messages (though not your email address) are visible to people not in the group. What’s new? Among other things, you can add images or attachments. Please be patient as we learn about this new platform. As always, we appreciate your support. The previous email ORForum email will not work after March 2, 2020.

*Finding Scots* June Ralston Anderson Finding Scottish ancestors will focus on beginning research in the US with online resources such as source finding aids, repositories, and libraries. Some examples of what you may find will be shown. There will be information about why the history of the pertinent times is very important. The talk will include some key historical events centered around those leading to both emigration and immigration; the push, pull events of geographers. For those with very early immigrants, I have some websites and sources that may help. I will also be bringing books for people to see that are some of my favorites. -- judiscot@gmail.com Puzzles of the Past <http://puzzlesofthepast.com> *"What do you hold so close to your own circle of life that you would not put a price on it? Hi All, Our next Writers’ Forum meeting will be February 8th from 1 - 3 PM at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, basement of the Ford Building, 2505 SE 11th Avenue. Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or to improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself or for others. We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last fifteen years writes better than they did when they started. We are currently working with Bruce Tarshis’s “How to Be Your Own Best Editor,” chapter 18 and if you are already a part of this group, look also for the message coming with more specifics about this month’s meeting. If you are new to the group, just show up and we’ll get you started! Hope you are able to attend! Greetings! The GFO DNA Beginner's Meeting is Feb 22 from 9-noon. The topic is using a spreadsheet with genetic genealogy. We will also have available our local expert Herb Femling to answer any questions you may have regarding spreadsheets. Some have asked why they need to know how to use a spreadsheet for their DNA matches. The answer can be multi-fold, but primarily to find which of your matches share a common segment. For three or more (including you) who share a segment on the same chromosome that is usually above 12 cMs (centimorgans.a measurement where the higher the number, the better), if all three people match each other on the same segment, they share a common ancestor or ancestral couple. That shared segment is a Half-identical Region (HIR). Finding these connections can help you add to your pedigree as well as share photos and, with luck, a match may be living in an area where you need to have some "on-the-ground" research accomplished. Another use of a spreadsheet is to organize your findings.the list of matches for whom you have found the common ancestors and to compile them from all the companies where you tested in one spreadsheet with information relevant to your research. Hopefully, some/all of you have uploaded your AncestryDNA accounts to Family Tree DNA, MyHeritage or GEDmatch so you can download your segments. Then, if you can, upload the information to a spreadsheet and start playing with it so you can present us with some questions to help you. In of all that light, we are looking for your questions, where possible, ahead of time so we can be sure to provide answer/help. Please send them to me as soon as you can. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing all of you! Best wishes, Emily If you do not hear from me in a timely manner, just write again...I was buried in email. Natchez Trace Join us for a journey through time along the Natchez Trace. Those of us with ancestors in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and more, may have ancestors who floated their goods down the Mississippi to sell or fought with Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. Maybe they fought in the Civil War battle of Shiloh or were early settlers in Tennessee or Mississippi. If so, the Natchez Trace may have played a part in your family history. But even if it didn’t, this short-lived rough road played an important role in the settlement and growth of the United States. We’re going to talk about the “Kaintucks,” the Native Americans, the soldiers, a mysterious death that is still being debated today, and even the bandits along the Trace, with photographs that might entice you to take a trip through history yourself. Can you please tell me the reason or value for spread sheets. I am unclear why a person would want to do the calculations & document through spreadsheets . Is it part of genealogy or more for tracking advanced info? F I have a list of possible cousins, is t that enough? Greetings! Our Beginner's DNA meeting for February 22nd (9 am to noon at the GFO Library) will cover not only how to use a spreadsheet for your DNA, but our local expert Herb Femling will be answering any of your questions regarding spreadsheets. You have some options to help you learn more from the presentation. These are not mandatory. 1. If you have tested only at AncestryDNA, as they do now show you the matches' segments, please transfer your raw data to any of the following: GEDmatch (free), Family Tree DNA (pay the $19 to get all the use), or MyHeritage ($29 to upload). Once you have done this, try to download your matches' segments data into whatever spreadsheet you have on your computer. There are free spreadsheets (Open Office is one) or you can purchase Excel if you do not have it. It would be beneficial if you learn your spreadsheet software. Herb and I use Excel. 2. Bring your laptop with the info on number 1, if you like (or can). 3. Send me any questions you have on dealing with a spreadsheet so that I or Herb can be sure to answer them. We will show you how to add and subtract rows and columns, how to custom sort, and how to determine triangulated groups along with a few other ideas. Questions we plan to include, but we want your questions, also: 1. How do I download the matches' segments into one file from all the testing companies where I have tested which have matches' segments (AncestryDNA does not!) (This includes GEDmatch even though they do not test.) 2. How do I add new matches to my spreadsheet without duplicating what I have already downloaded. As I have suggested, in preparation for this class, we would like to have your questions regarding spreadsheets so Herb can be sure to plan how to help you. Please send any questions you have to me (Emily) as soon as you can whether you plan to attend or not. I'm sure you are not the only one with a particular question. You may be receiving this request every couple of weeks, especially if we do not hear from you with questions. Some of you may have to transfer your raw data in order to do this and that, in itself, can take a week.so act now. Being able to work with a spreadsheet before class will help you know what questions you need answering. Thank you! Jan, Jeromy M. Suggested Google groups. If has to be better than facebook hopefully with out so much stuff to wade through. I am with you on being tired of Ancestry's greed as I call it. I just googled Random acts of genealogy kindness and got this. Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness: RAOGK https://raogk.org <https://raogk.org/> Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK) is a global volunteer organization. The purpose of this site is to help others obtain copies of documents, pictures of tombstones, etc., that can not be obtained easily by those who do not live in the area of their ancestors. <https://raogk.org/lookups/> Hope this helps those who are looking for it. With with the RootsWeb Lists being discontinued by Ancestry, this is the only other website family researchers, and genealogists could use, for free, to ask questions and get answers or suggestions from other family researchers. I'm waiting for the day when we find out they are going to shut down Find A Grave, or make it so you have to have a membership to Ancestry to access that too. There also use to be a website called "Random Acts of Kindness". It was also a great source that was free, where people could ask for and get help from a volunteer. But that is no longer found on the internet. I'm tired of Ancestry buying up websites, changing, and not for the better, or just closing discontinuing them.
