In regard to the list of CHAMBERLAIN/CHAMBERLINs you found in the censuses, I know a couple of these are "our" John CHAMBERLAIN or connect to him (I'll note how if I can remember off the top of my head because I don't have my files open right now, in brackets under each listing): 1849 CHAMBERLIN JOHN Champoeg County OR [I think this is his provisional land claim] 1845 CHAMBERLIN W. James Smith's DLC was at the junction of the Big and Little Lukiamute rivers (where they camped upon arrival on December 31, 1846, destitute from the disaster of the Southern Route), and his son John's was on the Little Lukiamute just north of him. Daughter Minerva Jane Smith used her middle name too, and the Longs settled in Oakland not Yoncalla in Douglas county, on John Long Road, where our cousin Robert Long's family has lived to this day. The first and only Long child born in Polk county was named John James Long for his father John Long and grandfather James Smith, and married Jesse Applegate's daughter Sallie and Robert Long still has a cabinet Jesse hand made them as a wedding present. Didn''t John Chamberlin eventually return to Polk county to live out his life in the care of one of his children, or some such? cousin Ross >>> {{Kathy here again}} A little side note to Ross's note... Yes John CHAMBERLAIN did return to Polk Co., he had written a letter to son John Wesley CHAMBERLAIN in 1889 (obviously a response to a request for information regarding his family) and it referred to his sisters and brothers (who seemingly did not accompany him from Ireland in 1831/2 with he and his sisters (Susan, Jane, Fannie & Marie). He referred to the brothers as Richard and "Offie" (probably short for Theophelis, my guess anyway) being younger than he. He stated that he had not heard from his family in quite a long time. In my own research, I did find one of the older sisters, Jane, who married a James TWIST and resided in PA and OH. I have corresponded with a descendant of them. As far as the others, I have not been able to verify their existances. As far as going further back on the father James SMITH and your gggg grandmother Elizabeth WRIGHT. I haven't been so lucky. Smiths in Virginia seem to have been a dime a dozen ;-) I had better luck on my gggg grandmother's line - as my gggg Mariah KEELE was daughter of Isaac KEELE & Patience KERR (d/o James KERR & Patience WELLS). The WELLS line has been facinating. I still think that it is entirely possible that the SMITHs were there as well, but separating and dissecting them all is discouraging, so I quickly lose interest..... sigh. Maybe you might have better luck! I think that Elizabeth WRIGHT's line is trackable. Since she is not my line, I have not pursued them, but I did find traces of them in my researching. Many of the Oregon Trail folks intermingled for many years prior to their trip to Oregon Territory in the 1840s, many of the names I find with my family in Oregon, are together when I trace them back to MO, IL, KY, VA and everywhere else.
