Hi Albert, I have the book and it is a most worthwhile addition to one's library. Most of the names do not have a date but for 1851 there are 18 names dated. Ms Hileman presents a table that reads: "Table One gives the estimated total of emigrants who traveled the trail going either to Oregon, California, or Utah. A comparison with Table Two (Summary of dated inscriptions) shows that in almost all cases, the years with the most dated inscriptions match the years of high trail traffic. Conversely 1851, a year of low trail traffic, shows few inscriptions." The table then shows that in 1851 the estimated total of emigrants was 6,200. Hope this helps, Regards, Jerry Carbiener Minden, NV -----Original Message----- From: Albert Belanger <skipb@nh.ultranet.com> To: OREGON-TRAIL-L@rootsweb.com <OREGON-TRAIL-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, February 09, 2002 8:03 AM Subject: In Tar and Paint and Stone >Bonjour, > >Does anyone have this book and can tell me if the inscribed names that are >listed include the date attached? > > >Albert > >Albert Edward Belanger >128 Middle Road >Brentwood, NH 03833 >(Researching 1851 Oregon Trail Migration & BLANCHARD, NOLAN(D), BOWMAN, >LINK, SLOW, KE(M)PLER & HALL of that year.) > > >
