Thelma Scroggins Weiner Colvin tells of early families and life. (from "In the Land of Bunch Grass, Gold and Trees") (Interview from Thelma Colvin. "Preacher Anthony preached from his heart. He lived on a hillside place very poor. His lips were dried and cracked open. Rachel (Long) Ballance was the teacher. Loren Carter and Tod Morrow teased Miss Gowen by hanging by their feet from the school window. Uncle Billie Townsend on the school board said. "....it's the same old complaint." Mrs Townsend said "Life is sad, to Annie and Gertie, " just look at the grave yard , no smiles. Mrs Townsend lived half a mile from cemetery. Tom Keeney was father to Fay and Dot who were first cousins to Rose Conger Carter because their mother was a sis ter to Charlie COnger. Bertha Kenney was Sherm's daughter. Thelma said Ed, her brother, said this to the teacher when she called them. "I don't onts (wants) to and my sister don't onts to either." The teacher was May Wearer. Sid Shaw chewed Thelma and Ed out for being late to school. He said "Stay at home or come on time'. Jean Raider said, "You shut your mouth...These kids are little. They walk and you ride!". George Sloan is the father of Merle, Tom, Clayton Elish, Alma, Mattie. Ivan Sloan was a brother to George Sloan. Ivan Sloan is a brother to Millie Sloan Keeney. Bill Colvin said in front of his uncle and Grandma from Seattle, "What the G.. damned hell you branding in here?". Thelma had thrown an old pair of shoes in the stove. The swearing in front of his grandmother embarrassed Thelma. .......comment most of these families lived around the Long Creek area etc....
