This URL has been provided before, but for those of you who missed it, I'll post again. It is probably the best place to look for names--and SO much more! I have 4 names of ancestors who arrived in Oregon before statehood after traveling on the Oregon Trail. ARRINGTON, HALPAIN, McCONNELL, and STUART/SEARLES. James Merville Arrington traveled with his wife, and the first 3 of his 9 children, in 1851 from either DeKalb County or Benton Co, Missouri. They came with a 6 year old, 4 year old and 3 year old! By the time child # 4 was born, they were in the current Portland area. They arrived in Happy Valley, Douglas County in 1853, where the rest of the children were born. There are several references to him in those early years in books about the history of Douglas County. He married Kittyann Caroline Halpain in Missouri before they left, and her brother Samuel Halpain with his wife Polly, and children, all traveled on the same wagon train. Their 3rd child was Frances Arrington, who married Aaron Rose, the founder of Roseburg, OR. The rest of the Arrington family lived south of Roseburg in the Happy Valley area, and their farm was close to the current area where the Wildlife Safari Park is in Winston, OR. The McConnell and Searles/Stuart story also ended in the same part of Douglas County. Family stories said that John McConnell's wife, and Myra Stuart's husband died on the trail, and that each was traveling with young children, so they got together, married, and had children together. John McConnell was born in Indiana in 1809, and married his first wife who may have been named Sarah Miller. The family was friends with Myra (nee Stuart)and David Searle or Searles in Indiana. They were making plans to leave for Oregon all together. I don't know when Sarah died, but it was apparently before 1852, because I found John McConnell and children, with no wife just prior to their setting out on the Oregon Trail. I did find David Searles in a mortality table in Indiana in Aug. 1851, so it looks like both spouses died before they even set out. John and Myra were married in Clackamas County in 1855, with a DLC in Yamhill County. Then them moved to Douglas County in about 1860, and are found on census records there for the next 20 years. I don't know anything about their trips, but would like to know. I know more about their lives after they arrived in Douglas County than anything that occurred earlier, so I'm watching the list in case someone includes one of these names in the narrative about their own family. HERE'S MY EARLIEST PIONEER ANCESTOR. Do you recognize any connections to your pioneers? Martin GILLIHAN b (born) 30 Oct 1824 Jackson Co, TN; d 26 Jan 1906 Portland, Multnomah Co, OR buried at the Old City Cemetery in Vancouver, Clark Co, WA. Martins parents were Thomas GILLIHAN & Lucinda "Lucy" BROWN. In 1844 Martin left Polk County, Missouri and started across the overland trail with ox teams and driving a band of cattle along with the Wagon group called the California Company or the Cornelius GILLIAM Wagon Train. Martin married first on 21 May 1844 on the Oregon Trail to Elizabeth AZBILL/ASABILL daughter of Franklin M ASBELL/ASABELL, they may have had a child in 1844 along the Oregon Trail possibly in MO. They divorsed later in Sep 17, 1846 (Bill of Divorse). After 6 monthes on the Oregon Trail they arrived in Washington County, Oregon, he worked on a ranch during winter and following spring. In 1845 he farmed independently on a piece of land & in fall of 1846 came to Sauvie's Island. He settled there on farm of 640 acres now owned and occupied by John Howell. In the spring of 1847 he traded his land for 3 Cayuse horses, and with his brother WILLIAM, rode on horseback down into California, where they worked in the woods near San Francisco. Later on he worked on a ranch near Santa Clara and in the spring of 1848 went to Sutter Mills & saw first gold taken out of that place. Returned to Oregon fall of 1848 and in spring of 1849 returned again to California across mountains with ox teams & prospected/mined in vicinity of Hangtown. Returned to Oregon in winter of 1849 accompanied by his BROTHER'S WIDOW and her 3 children & located on the farm belonging to Mrs Gillihan (widow), but which was purchased from her by her brother-in-law Martin Gillihan in 1850. Martin married second to Sarah C Howell on Dec 15, 1850 and had 13 kids settling a Donation Land Claim this same year signed by President U. S. Grant. Sarah and her family had traveled the Oregon Train also in 1850. In the 1970's Martin traveled back eastward (probably to Missouri) to bring his brothers west; Gideon & Thomas GILLIHAN by Wagon Train. Do you recognize any connections to your pioneers? The following was on the Norcal Rootsweb List for San Benitio Co. Ca. marilyn The Free Lance, Hollister, CA; Oct. 11, 1901, p. 1: **Death of Mrs. E.L. BACON -- Mrs. Elizabeth L. BACON, one of the pioneer settlers in this county, died at her residence at Bear Valley, this county, last Thursday, at the ripe age of 74 years. Deceased settled in Bear Valley in 1866, years before this county was created out of Monterey county. A native of Illinois, in company with her first husband, Phillip SCHELL, she crossed the plains to Oregon in 1852, and after Mr. SCHELLs death, with her 3 little children, she moved to Siskiyou county. In 1855 she married M.A. BACON and the family moved to Alameda county, where they resided until 66. In 1890 Mr. BACON died. Deceased was regarded with deep affection and respect by all who knew her. The old settlers especially, will learn with keen regret, of her death, for, in the early days, her residence was known far and wide for its hospitality to the way farer. Deceased leaves a family of 3 sons (O.F., H.G., and B.F. BACON) and 3 daughters, Mrs. Henry MELINDEY, of Bear Valley, and Mrs. BURTON and Mrs. CHURCHILL, of Tulare county. The funeral took place last Saturday afternoon from her late residence in the valley, and the remains were interred in the Willow Creek cemetery. The funeral was largely attended.

I have info that calls him Lloyd and some that calls him Floyd... can anyone confirm which? He was mentioned in This Bloody Deed , a book about a massacre on the Nez Perce trail. If anyone has access to this book, I would like a verbatim account of what is said about this Magruder who was killed He was married to Caroline Pelham Magruder, and they had a son John Carter Magruder. I am looking in particular for the children of John Carter Magruder's and Flora Edna Collins. John Carter and Flora Edna lived in Yakima, WA the children were Lydia Collins Magruder Breshears, married to Herman Bell Breshears who lived in WA state, John Magruder , Fred Magruder and Carrie Magruder Fieger or Fiegler who lived in OR state. In Flora Edna's obit for 1940, it mentions 5 grand children and 4 great grand children as surviving her, along with my ancestress, Mrs. Eva Collins Williams, who was Flora's sister, and who was my 2x great gramma. I will happily share what I have on this line with descendents.Thank you list. gloria
