    3. I checked "Platte River Road Narratives" and "Overland Passages" for mention of the the Morris diary. Neither records it. It would be nice to get a copy in the Oregon Historical Society, or elsewhere, so it would be available. 2. Jamie and Nicole Olson
    3. The Multnomah Co. OR Public Library has a service called Ask Us Online which can be accessed at http://www.multnomah.lib.or.us/lib/questions.html. They will even look items up in their newspaper index which references papers back to 1850. If they find your ancestor listed you can get copies of the obituary etc. for a fee. I had someone lookup my gggrandmother's brother in the newspaper index which lead to 2 articles in the Oregon Journal by Fred Lockley - he wrote a series called Impressions of the Journal Man in the 1930's - these 2 articles contained a wealth of information on my family. The Oregon Historical Society, http://www.ohs.org/, has part of their catalog online. They also have a large collection of newspapers and will send photocopies of material at very reasonable prices. I found a handwritten manuscript by my ggggrandmother in their online catalog! Hope this helps someone. Regards, Nicole

    3. Thelma Scroggins Weiner Colvin tells of early families and life. (from "In the Land of Bunch Grass, Gold and Trees") (Interview from Thelma Colvin. "Preacher Anthony preached from his heart. He lived on a hillside place very poor. His lips were dried and cracked open. Rachel (Long) Ballance was the teacher. Loren Carter and Tod Morrow teased Miss Gowen by hanging by their feet from the school window. Uncle Billie Townsend on the school board said. "....it's the same old complaint." Mrs Townsend said "Life is sad, to Annie and Gertie, " just look at the grave yard , no smiles. Mrs Townsend lived half a mile from cemetery. Tom Keeney was father to Fay and Dot who were first cousins to Rose Conger Carter because their mother was a sis ter to Charlie COnger. Bertha Kenney was Sherm's daughter. Thelma said Ed, her brother, said this to the teacher when she called them. "I don't onts (wants) to and my sister don't onts to either." The teacher was May Wearer. Sid Shaw chewed Thelma and Ed out for being late to school. He said "Stay at home or come on time'. Jean Raider said, "You shut your mouth...These kids are little. They walk and you ride!". George Sloan is the father of Merle, Tom, Clayton Elish, Alma, Mattie. Ivan Sloan was a brother to George Sloan. Ivan Sloan is a brother to Millie Sloan Keeney. Bill Colvin said in front of his uncle and Grandma from Seattle, "What the G.. damned hell you branding in here?". Thelma had thrown an old pair of shoes in the stove. The swearing in front of his grandmother embarrassed Thelma. .......comment most of these families lived around the Long Creek area etc.... I cannot take credit for these articles they are from a wonderful collection of stories put together by Rita Carter Smith and Louetta Zumwalt Shaw. irma [email protected]

The Legislature passed the measure, which was signed by Governor Curry, and in 1857 the Village of The Dalles became an incorporated city. Col. N.H. Gates wrote the charter. The legislature granted the charter to Dalles City on June 26, 1857. This charter has been amended at various times since, the principal changes having been made by the Legislatures of 1859, 1862, 1868, 1870 and 1880. The first officers elected to serve under the charter, which was granted on June 26, 1857, were N.H. Gates, president of the board, with E.G. Cowne, R. Hall, B.F. McCormick, and P. Craig. C.R. Meigs was recorder, and Orlando Humason treasurer. The new charter, which was granted in 1859, was written by Orlando Humason, and it extended the city limits to the second bluff and provided for the election of regular city officials in place of trustees. Among the principal places of business in 1858 were The Umatilla House, A.J. Nixon, proprietor; The Cushing Hotel, restaurant and lodging house, N.H. Gates, proprietor; The Wasco Hotel, A.H. 3. I know that Oregon wasn't a state until 1859. Let me try that again. I know that my gr gr grandfather Nineveh Ford was a member of the Oregon TERRITORY House of Representatives in 1854/55 because I have a copy of the warrant requesting that he be paid for that service. It is also a receipt (with his signature), and he was paid $186.00 for service from December 4, 1954 through February 1, 1955 @ $3/day plus milage for 40 miles traveled; paid Februry 1, 1855. 2. Cecil Houk
    3. Hi Oregon Trail Listers: Don't get real hung up on the names of Counties were your early Oregon people may have lived. The present day Counties of Oregon are very much different from those of 100 years ago. My grandmother Nora May Montgomery was born in Lamonta, Wasco Co., OR in 1875. In 1895 Lamonta was in Crook Co., OR. My father Geroge Douglas Houk was born in Lamonta, Jefferson Co., OR in 1909. All three are the same town. This is a very slow server (with big files): The 1895 Atlas of Oregon Counties http://www.livgenmi.com/orcounty FYI: Lamonta was about midway between Madras and Prinevile, OR a bit to the east of HWY 26. At one time it had a Post Office.
