Hi all Well, don't bother sending E-mail to Rep. Pease about the Internet and genealogy. Following is the "automated" response I got from the e-mail that I sent to him, and I personally feel that he will never see the original message. Perhaps sending a letter to one of the addresses below would be better. By the way, living in Colorado, I sent a cc: to my Senators, and also my Representative. I did get "automated" responses to this e-mail, but all of them did state that my message would be read and answered. 05/25/2000 -- 22:00 Elizabeth Lawrence, thank you for sharing your comments with Congressman Ed Pease via the Internet. The Internet is one of the many ways in which Congressman Pease listens to fellow Hoosiers from the Seventh District of Indiana. While this site is used to receive information, personal responses are not provided in this medium. If you would like a response regarding your comments or need assistance on a specific matter, please contact one of the Congressman’s offices listed below. Danville Office: 355 S. Honorable Rep. Pease: What will it take to make our federal and state legislators realize that we don't need more regulations and laws, we need less! The more laws and regulations we have, the less freedom we have, and therefore the closer we become to a police state. We certainly do not need any regulation on genealogy on the Internet, or even a general regulation of any kind on any internet activity. It might be a good idea to have a regulation to control the behavior and thinking of many legislators. I have many European friends who are concerned about the way we, as a nation, are moving towards a police state, more and more every day. In their opinion, the loss of freedom is by small steps, until all freedom is gone, which usually results in a revolution. Ask them, they know. As they say they've had them for hundreds of years in Europe. They are convinced that a revolution in the United States will happen sooner, rather than later. I have a web site on the Internet that is accessed and used by hundreds of school districts on a daily basis on History, and the Westward Movement. I have upwards of 1500 "hits" per day. I'm an historical researcher and writer, have studied and interpreted history all my life, and for those reasons I believe that the thinking of the Europeans is valid. I'm a firm believer in the free speech on the Internet, and lack of regulations, but I also believe strongly that the Internet needs to be self-regulating. That's the job of the family. Please take the time to look at my website on the "Overland Trail" which is in Northern Colorado: http://www.over-land.com and see that there are no advertisements, even though on a daily basis I'm bombarded with requests to put on ads that may net me thousands of dollars per month. This is another example of "self regulation." I believe that the genealogy sites on the Internet have sparked an interest in billions of families to look at their "roots." A person that is searching his genealogy is helping to build family identity and values. I am of Icelandic descent, and have no need to search the genealogy web sites, as all of our history has been published for hundreds of years, is readily available to all Icelandic citizens, and it's availability hasn't hurt us in any way. But, the freedom to have such genealogical sites, and to search these sites by others, for basically no cost at all, needs to remain unregulated! Thank you. Elizabeth Lawrence

I haven't had any new mail from this list since 5/7/00. Is the list still up? I hope you all have been getting the continuing parts of my series "The Elliot Cut Off and The Lost Wagon Train of 1853. I have posted parts 1 - 9 so far. If you are missing any of these parts please contact me. Thanks Stephen
Danny & Jeanette, I can't tell you for sure that no wagon trains used the Santa Fe Trail in 1894, but it may be that your family was in Syracuse in a wagon in 1894. The railroad reached New Mexico in the late 1870s bringing an end to wide use of the trail. Also, the Indians were driven onto reservations by 1890 (Sand Creek Massacre occurred in 1864, Little Big Horn in 1876) so there was probably little need for large organized wagon trains by 1894. Autos were another ten or so years away. (My dad's family roamed around Oklahoma in a wagon, probably as late as the 1920s, but they just followed cotton harvests, farm or logging work or whatever they could find.) Of course, US Hwy 50 follows the general route of the Santa Fe Trail through Kansas, and SE Colorado, so you could say the Santa Fe Trail is still in use. -Judy
I know this list is for the Oregon Trail but I hope someone on the list can help. Would anyone know if the Santa Fe Trail was still is use in 1894 and if so would there be a record of a train that was in Syracuse, KS on September 27, 1894?
Lenard's Rock is identified in the 1913 Sherman County atlas in the center of Section 8, T1N, R19E. Information will be welcome and appreciated concerning the Rock in this atlas. Is it the same as the one described below? Some clues. The Sherman County Historical Society moved, preserved and erected a six-foot basalt column in 1993 on the road from Wasco to McDonald, near the Oregon Trail Crossing of the John Day River. It had been removed from its original site long before that, and reportedly broken in two parts by a road grader after that. It appears that inscriptions include: / D.T.H. / OCT 17 / R / R / JAN 9 / 1891 / --7 / CHAS BO / LA GRAVES / Oct 1. Not in any particular order. Daniel G. Leonard lived on the John Day River at the Oregon Trail Crossing site and operated Leonard's Ferry and Leonard's Bridge at his stage stop. He settled on the John Day River in 1861, built the bridge in 1863 with his partner, Underwood. In the 1860 census of Wasco County, OR, Fall River [Deschutes River] Precinct, P.O. Cascades, he was 40 b NH, wife Sarah 24 b TN, child Francis, 2 born OR. In the 1870 census he lived E of the Deschutes River in Wasco County, in the household of Edward L. Grimes and his family. He was born ca. 1818 in Vermont/NH and was shot to death at his place in 1878. He is buried in Pioneer Cemetery in The Dalles, OR. Reportedly he married first a woman who divorced him about 1855; had a common-law wife Sarah [Elrod] Jaquith who separated from him ca. 1870s; married Marie Gysin, a Swiss/French immigrant, license May 18, 1875 Multnomah County, OR. Ed Irby of Arlington, OR in 1979 reported that Dan Leonard was the father of his mother-in-law. Dan and Sarah apparently had four children, two that died by 1870, Frances and George who were living in 1870. Sarah lived at the John Day River home in the late 1850s until ca 1878. Marie/Mary Leonard was accused of shooting Leonard and was acquitted. She became Oregon's first female lawyer ca 1885 and had a siter Rosa Schlickeiser who lived in or near Wilsonville and died 1912 in Multnomah County. It was getting well into summer and the sun seemed a great red disk in the smoky sky. No one, who has not experienced it, can realize the tedious monotony of those long hot days in the lumbering, swaying old wagons, with the dust and the sun and the slow oxen barely moving, the creaking wagons keeping time to the puff, puff of the oxen's feet in the dust, mile after mile, day after day, and week after week. The talk became half hearted, was disconnected or had ceased altogether. It was easier to sleep, so women and children slept a great deal. Even the drivers would nod and nod, till the slowing up of the oxen would call them to themselves again, for even the oxen seemed spiritless and drowsy and had to be continually urged, to keep them moving at all. I used to sit beside the driver and let my feet hang over the front of the wagon box. Hour after hour, I have watched the slow fore feet of the oxen as they lifted them out of pockets of heavy dust, the suction causing little whirls that drifted and settled about their hind feet, as each in turn found almost the exact spot where the fore feet had been, but a moment before. It makes me drowsy even now when I think about it. Mile after mile I have watched them, till I fancied that I saw red where Dave and Jerry stepped. I tried to show it to Mother for I thought their feet were bleeding and I was worried. Mother said "No, you have looked too long at the red sun." I tried to accept that explanation. I also tried to keep from looking at their feet, but there was nothing else to look at, except the wagon just ahead and the perfectly round rim of the horizon. The grass was dying and looked burned and yellow in the glare. Occasionally a driver would go to sleep. One day my brother, Daniel, a great easy going dreamy eyed boy, was driving one of our teams. He was well toward the rear of the long line of wagons. He fell asleep and the oxen, going slower and slower, finally stopped altogether. The following drivers thought it a fine joke when they pulled out and around to leave the boy and the wagon standing there in the lonely road. It was not till camp was made several hours later that Father missed the boy and his oxen. A party was hastily organized to go back for him. Everyone was frightened, for we were in an Indian country, but they found him quite safe, still asleep, in the middle of the dusty road. Father was very angry at the men who had left him behind. Everyone was provoked about it. I suppose that something was said, there usually was when Father felt justified. But anyway, it never happened to Daniel again or to anyone else for that matter, and it was not laughed about or spoken of as a joke either. Walt Davies from the book Into the Eye of the Setting Sun by Charlotte Matheny Kirkwood (1838-1926)
I've seen Flora's lists, but is there source I could go to find the names of people of each individual wagon train? What I've read tells me that families accompanied others who had been their neighbors, friends, and/or co-religionists. Is the only listing the one made at Ft. Laramie? If "yes" is the answer, is it available on-line? If so, what is site address? Thanks, Ken Robinson [email protected]
Thank you, Walt. That is a wonderful look at the monotony of traveling the trails (any trail) that our ancestors walked to populate this vast country of ours. Isn't it great that they had such fortitude? Lois in CA

Going on the assumption that these settlers traveled in groups, I've been researching other names associated with mine trying to find out where Zebedee's parents came from. Unfortunately, I haven't had much success. For example, Absalom HEMBREE and Thomas M WRIGHT signed Zebedee's land donation claim, but I can make absolutely no connection.
