    1. GOVERNORS OF OREGON
    2. Laura C
    3. Listers, I met a gal recently who said her greatgrandfather was governor of Oregon. It was SNELL. Any links?? Earl Snell was Oregon's governor from January 11, 1943 to October 28, 1947. Earl Snell was born in Olex, Oregon on July 11, 1895. Snell served in the Army during World War I, coming back to Gilliam County at war's end. He tried the newspaper business before entering the automobile business in Arlington and Condon. From 1915 to 1945 he operated a dealership with a partner. Snell served on Arlington's City Council. Snell began his political career in 1927 when he was elected state representative. Snell remained in the Legislative Assembly until 1934 when he left his position as Speaker of the House to take the elected position of Secretary of State. He served as Secretary of State from 1934 to 1942, then was elected Oregon's twenty-third governor in 1942. Governor Snell was re-elected in 1946 and served until October 28, 1947, when he was killed in a plane crash in the wild terrain east of Klamath Falls along with Secretary of State Robert S. Farrell Jr., President of the Senate Marshall E. Cornett, and their pilot Cliff Hogue. Snell was vitally interested in Oregon's forests and the problems facing the state in managing forest lands, including the effects of the 1933 Tillamook Burn, which devastated 240,000 acres. He charged a Special Forestry Committee with the responsibility of making a complete survey and analysis of Oregon's forestry program, with particular emphasis on the Tillamook burn, fire prevention, and reforestation. The lumber industry consistently occupied first or second place in the commercial activities of the state's economy and Oregon's forestry laws and policies were recognized as outstanding in the nation. In addition to his environmental legacy, Snell also campaigned for old-age relief without increasing taxation; post-war aid in education; home ownership; and liberalization of unemployment compensation. Governor Snell placed emphasis on improving winter travel by developing and improving roads and resorts. He wanted Oregon to become the winter wonderland for vacationers, and expand tourism to become more than a summer industry. A state employees' retirement system was also adopted during Snell's tenure as governor. This website has the history of all the governors of Oregon. It is from the Oregon Archives which is a wonderful SEARCHABLE database. http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/banners/governors.htm This is the Oregon Blue Book, it will have all your addresses for obits, marriages, courthouses etc. http://bluebook.state.or.us/search/search.htm It is searchable, rather fun, give it a try for anything!! Those of you searching Columbia Co. etc. make sure to search Oregon too. Laura in Seattle Soon to visit Salem, Albany and Lebanon for the first time!! 1. George Washington Carr, d Oregon 1902
    2. I thought that the or-roots or the OREGON-TRAIL-L folks might possibly be the ones to be able to shed some light on this for the CARR-L or possibly it may benefit someone on either OR list. Please reply to <[email protected]> with any questions or insight on the CARR family involved. It is obviously Creswell not the typo of Crewell where this man died in 1902. I haven't been able to access the database of the Oregon Archives to find any additional info to help Pat. Perhaps someone else can help. Tell the people in Manhattan, Kansas, that the river flowing into the Kansas River is not the Republican River and you may get a real geography lesson. 2. If the emigrants did actually cross the Republican River then they were lost. They should have picked up the Oregon Trail at Marysville, KS, traveled about a day west to the Little Blue and then turn north and follow it up to Rock Creek Station near Fairbury, NE. If they crossed the Little Blue and proceeded about two days west rather than not cross and proceed north, they would have picked up the Republican. (Which IS a tributary of the Kansas or Kaw River!) 3. If at any time the emigrants following the south bank of the Platte River from Ft. Kearny (note spelling) as far as california Crossing had turned south and gone over the divide they would be looking into the Republican drainage as it parallels the Platte. jim tompkins

Both James Field in 1845 and John McBride in 1846, in chronicling their journey west from St. Joseph, make a similar reference to crossing the Republican River, a branch of the Kansas (which technically it is not), the day after crossing the Big Blue River and meeting the Oregon Trail from Independence (Burnett's Trace). Can any of you trail experts tell me what they are referring to here, and what river they might have confused with the Republican, and why both would be similarly confused, or just what exactly is going on here? 3. A. J. Price, 1866-1957, grew up in NW Sherman County, OR. In the 1930s and 1940s he wrote a number of articles for the Sherman County Journal about the early days of settlement in what was then Wasco County, OR. His folks operated a stage stop at Sand Spring S of Biggs, his father, Samuel Price, having come to present-day Sherman County in 1862. In 1894 the remains of a burial were exposed by the wind at the mouth of Spanish Hollow, Biggs [Junction], on the Columbia River in Sherman County, OR. This is an unusually sandy site, known for the sand blowing and drifting, as high as second story windows in the early days. Samuel Price boxed the remains and gave notice of their finding, speculating that it was a grave dating to 1843. Disposition of the remains is unknown. No further information. No research offered. 1. FISH, Walter: -Deeds, incl. Barlow Store
    2. Quite sometime ago, early December, 1999, Marsha Bradley-Luthy wrote asking me if I was aware of her family's interest in the Barlow store and she quoted a journal written by Nancy R. Stewart from a History of Walter Fish Family, Sept 26,1949, Found at State Library OSL NS-1a. It begins: "I am writing this for my mother whose name is Nancy Roxana Fish Stewart born near Oregon City, in 1858 and daughter of Walter Fish. " The next sentence: "Her Father crossed the planes in 1847 and settled on a farm 6 miles South up the Willamette from Oregon City and 1 mile from Rock Island in a wild region. A large Eddy near the farm was named for her father Fishes Eddy." My note: Walter Fish came to Oregon 1847.... the same year William E. Larkins family came to Oregon. Two of William E. Larkins' daughters married two of Samuel K. Barlow's sons: Rachel m. William Barlow, and Rebecca m. James Barlow. Nancy Roxanna (Fish) Stewart tells that: "In 1866 they sold the place and moved to Oregon City. Father bough [sic] the old Barlow grocery Store later on put in Hardware. It was the largest store in Oregon City he bough6t [sic] his coffee in 100 lbs sacks also the peanuts mother would take the green coffee beans put them in a _____pan put in the oven and brown. them she would take a tablespoos of butter 2 of brown Sugar pore over then browed coffe she would roast it in the oven until it was glazed There it was sold in the Store they rosted the peanuts in the oven she took one day to do the work. In one corner of the store my father operated the first telegraph office that was in Oregon." Note: According to Clackamas County Grantee/Grantor records I have in my library file, Walter Fish obtained deeds beginning May 7, 1855 from A. and B. Holley, Section 28 Twp. 3 Range 1. Feb 12, 1859 from I.F. and R.S. Beals Sec. 28 Twp 3 Range 1 Oct 25, 1860 from A.F. Hedges [Fish received a bond] * Jan 22, 1861 from R.S. & I.F. Beals Section 28 Twp 3, Range 1 Apr. 13, 1864 from G.W. Fish Section 28, Twp. 5, Range 2 Apr. 13 1864 from E.E. Fish, Section 28, Twp 5, Range 2 Mar 13, 1867 from M.A. & William Barlow- Plot L1, Block 1, Oregon City* Note: The record of Walter Fish's purchase of "the Barlow store" was negotiated Mar 13, 1867 from M.A. & William Barlow- Plot L1, Block 1, Oregon City. The actual record can be found at Oregon City courthouse, in Book E580, on microfilm. Note: Absalom Hedges m. Samuel K. Barlow's youngest daughter Elizabeth Jane Barlow. He first settled on one of the four corners of Molalla. Out of the four corners of Molalla, there were three Barlow connections. William Barlow shared a corner and William E. Larkins shared another corner. William Barlow states in his reminiscences that he sold his place soon after 1847 and moved into Oregon City He and Absalom Hedges joint ventured in platting out Canemah. Nancy Roxanna (Fish) Stewart also states, regarding her family's 1847 arrival: "In the group as I remember was Rev. Dr. Atkinson and Wife, William Barlow* and wife.... " Note: Nancy Roxanna(Fish) Stewart's parents DID NOT travel with William Barlow and wife..... They may have traveled with William E. Larkins' family, whose daughter, Rachel Larkins later married William Barlow after they arrived Oregon City. /s/ Jackie (from state of Washington) <[email protected]> ======================================== ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET!
