CPL = The California Pioneer List is a list of settlers to California who migrated to or were born in California prior to 1880 (included in the 1880 California Census) and obtained from those sent(e-mailed) directly from individuals doing genealogical research. <http://cpl.cagenweb.com/index.htm > or < http://cpl.cagenweb.com/cpl_list.htm > Note: The year of settlement in California is not a true indication of arrival on the West Coast. To determine the year of arrival and whether or not it was an overland journey, one needs to contact the submitter of the name. This can be done by accessing the CA GenWeb website All emigrants cited from this list have a ? to indicate further research is necessary to validate an O. T.connection. Whew! What a blessing you guys are! This morning I turned on my E-mail to find some really wonderful information/help on my DOUGLASS family who (reportedly) arrived in Oregon in Nov. 1852. I was really starting to 'sweat' (do women do that?) because I had to have an article submitted for publication in the Troutdale Historical Society newsletter on the DOUGLASS family...TOMORROW! And nothing I could find gave me evidence they had been on a wagon train coming to Oregon in the year 1852. As yet I do not know what wagon train they were on but have evidence they were here and after the article is out I will work on what wagon train they were on. I have a wealth of information about their trip and will (later) get it to the proper places so their experience can be documented. I found an enormous amount of information on another DOUGLASS family that settled in the area of Eagle Creek, (not so very far from Troutdale) but can not see any tie to the Troutdale DOUGLASS's except the n! aming pattern (John's, James, etc.) and the close proximity to Troutdale. The DOUGLASS family of Troutdale are like the SKIDMORE, YEON, PITTOCK, etc families of Portland. They were early settlers who did a great deal to carve civilization out of wilderness and their plight needs to be recognized and recorded. Thanks again, guys Doneva Shepard in Gresham http://maxpages.com/donevas OR my entire genealogy database, 40,000+ names http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=donevanell (be sure entire URL fits in your Address bar) --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? The donation land claim record says John DOUGLASS arrived in Oregon 10 Nov 1852. Sandy Wilbur Doneva Shepard wrote: > > Oops! I am researching the John DOUGLASS family who were (reported by family) located in Wells co., IN until the year 1852 when they decided to make the long journey across the plains to Oregon. The DOUGLASS family had several daughters who were married at the time. The daughters and their husbands reportedly accompanied their father along with young brother, John Jr. I cannot find them in any of the wagon trains, only in oral histories given by descendants in the 1970's. Can someone help me to establish which wagon train they came on? Here is the family that reportedly made the trip by ox pulled covered wagon in 1852; John DOUGLASS, b. 14 June 1794, Cumberland, PA and wife Elizabeth (Lefevre) DOUGLASS who died in June 1852 on the trail from Pneumonia at Green River where she is reported to be buried. John jr. received a DLC in 1875 and 1881 which is now in the city of Troutdale, OR. Douglass cemetery in that town is from land donated by the DOUGLASS family. Any related expense would be far less than time and money consuming trips to where these are available otherwise. There is a difference bewteen modern and original surveys - anything built since the original! If you are looking for an 1870s claim and the survey was done in 1860, then it won't be there. Sharon is saving you a trip to the closest BLM office to get a copy off of microfiche for $1.10 a sheet of paper. Metzker maps are an invaluable tool for general research. The Metzgers did a service, up to 1954, of overlaying Donation Land Claims over a modern (for that time) street grid. SOL for claims after DLCs. Sharon is doing you a service by saving you a trip to 36 county libraries since few counties carry other county maps. The state archives in Salem has the entire state as it was in 1929 on microfilm, but have you ever seen a microfilm photocopy? Thank you Sharon jim

Gary- try www.esg.montana.edu/gl/index.html. Then click on graphical locator then on township-range-section conversion. This should show you creeks, crossroads, zoom in, zoom out and more.
This conversation on land deeds, reminds me that I have been looking for a site that would allow you to enter survey coordinates (range, township, section etc..) and then map you to the location. Going to county survey offices halfway across the country is not an option for most of us. Does anyone know of a map web site that can do this? The BLM site does not have any such feature.
>how do I do a blm search? Go to http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ on your internet server. 1. When the GLO/BLM homepage comes up there are several choices on the left edge. Choose the one labeled "Search Land Patents" (They will probably ask your zip code for their records) 2. There should be a column with boxes to fill and a couple of pull down windows with a "Search" button at the top and bottom. 3. You need to pull down the name of a state. The minimum info you have to provide is a surname. The more boxes you fill, the fewer records they check. (I suggest start with the minimum - more names to choose from and possibly a claim you didn't know about.) For example if I pull down Oregon and type my last name (Tompkins) and press either "Search" button I will get 44 names on 2 pages. (Three are my ancestors.) If I had pulled down Oregon, typed my last name, and pulled down Clackamas County, and hit "Search" I get only two names (my ancestors husband and wife). 4. Choose any of the resulting patentee names and press the"Details" button to its left. You will get a Patent Description including names on the patent, patent number, date of issue, whether it was a donation, homestead or purchase, etc. 5. If you press the tab labeled "Legal Land Description" you get a description in surveyors terms including Township & Range, sections, county, etc. With knowledge of reading surveyors maps you can determine exactly where the claim was and its general shape. 6. If the Patentee name is in Blue regular type you can press the tab labeled "Document Image" and get a photocopy of the actual patent certificate sent to the patentee, complete with presidential signature. If it is in Red italics there is not an image to view and that choice will be disabled. You will be given several choices of how the image is to be transmitted. The fastest choice is "Small GIF". If you have not heard of an image type, you probably don't know how to process images and vice versa. Other image types give better quality images (and are accordingly slower to download - with DSL it took from 18 to 24 seconds to download, that would be up to 5 minutes on a regular modem). Warning: If you try downloading an image type which your computer cannot receive it will send your browser in circles and you'll have to physically back out or force quit. PS Don't fret, they also provide instructions on the right side of each search page. jim
