    3. Sunday, January 13, 2002 Looking Back is compiled each week by Elroy King 20 Years Ago, January 13, 1982 The new juvenile detention facility for Wasco County approved for use by a state jail inspection team on Tuesday, was officially opened for use today in ceremonies attended by county administrators. County Judge Rick Cantrell and juvenile department director Jim Roth handled the official opening ceremony. Before the facility here opened juveniles who had to be detained were taken either to Portland or Pendleton, a costly procedure, both in reimbursing those counties for detention costs and in transporting local juveniles back and forth to those facilities. 40 Years Ago, January 13, 1962 Jacque Bucholtz, Sherman High School, and Bill Garrett, Goldendale (Washington), will be crowned 1962 Youth for Christ King and Queen by television star Ty Hardin of the "Cheyenne" series Monday at 8 p.m. at The Dalles High Auditorium. Voting for the Queen and King was held in November, with teen age nominees representing The Dalles, Sherman (Oregon), Wasco Union (Oregon), Condon (Oregon), Goldendale (Washington), Columbia and Trout Lake (Washington) high schools. Winners were announced last Sunday at a rally with Dave Grant, from the staff for Youth for Christ International. The Dalles Indians, who are establishing somewhat of a reputation for sharp shooting, outscored an eager but often ineffective Redmond team here Friday night to pull even with the Panthers in Intermountain Conference play. The score was 48-31. The win was the first in three conference starts for The Dalles. Top scorers for the Indians last night was guard K.C. Kortge with 16. 60 Years Ago, January 13, 1942 Residents of Wasco County who have yet to be call on by members of The Dalles High School band -- recently placed in charge of collecting waste paper for defense purposes -- were asked to have patience today by Director Melvin Johnson, who said that the weather had impeded local solicitations thus far but that the drive is continuing and a complete house-to-house canvas will be conducted in the near future. Despite existing handicaps, approximately 15 tons of paper already have been collected and now is stacked on a loading platform of The Dalles Cooperative Growers, Johnson revealed. Ten new directors were named to the executive board of The Dalles Chamber of Commerce yesterday when the annual election was conducted in this city. Those elected from a total of 19 candidates include: W.R. Webber, I.C. Davies, M.M. Donnell, Max Kaseberger, V.E. Rolfe, Carl Stiefel, L. Barnum, F.M. Sexton, R.B. Bennett and H.L. Eddins. 80 Years Ago, January 13, 1922 The railroad wreck at Celilo (Oregon) on the morning of December 1, in which trains No. 17 and 12 crashed head on with the resulting toll of seven killed and scores injured was caused by the "more or less failure on the part of officials of the Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Company to adhere strictly to the written rules of that railroad," according to the findings of the Oregon Public Service Commission based on the investigation of "the circumstances of the wreck made by that body." A copy of the commission's findings has just been received by coroner C.N. Burget. 100 Years Ago, January 13, 1902 Hon Riley, as he calls himself, claiming to be a former member of parliament, was escorted to the Chateau D'Wood by His Honor, the Marshal, who found him condescending to address common, ordinary citizens familarly and honoring them for a "five". He spent the day in "quietude", not being able to secure the "five." In honor of the late D.M. French, senior member of the firm, the bank of French & Co. will be closed until Wednesday morning. As will be seen by the call from the mayor in another column, business houses will be closed tomorrow from 12 to 6, the funeral taking place a 1. Many flags were at half mast throughout the city today. Written permission to reprint Looking Back: A Glimpse Through The Chronicles Files given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon.
