    3. Surnames: Steers, Gross Henry Edward Steers, 79, a lifelong resident of The Dalles, died at the local hospital on Saturday, January 26, 2002. He was born May 13, 1922 in The Dalles, the second of three sons to Joseph Hugh and Mae Adeline (Gross) Steers. He grew up in The Dalles, attended the Court Street Grade School and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1940. He attended and played football at the University of Oregon before entering the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a combat infantry officer in the European Theater. He returned to college after the war and completed his degree in education. He returned to The Dalles to work for a short time for Wasco County before beginning teaching math at the Chenowith Middle school. He was a life member of The Dalles Elks Lodge No. 303 and was a former member of The Dalles Country Club and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Hugh, in 1966, and his twin brother, Howard, in July of 2001. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 1 at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home with Asa Jenson officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory. Memorials may be made to the Wasco County Museum, 5000 Discovery Drive, The Dalles, OR 97058.
