Dear listers, I have ancestors who lived in Grant's pass, OR c. 1878-1885 time should I check Jackson co records or should I also check Josephine Co records? Also I do not see that many records of either county are at the OR state archives. Does anyone have much experience dealing with this county; such as is it worth trying write to request the records, or do I need to hire a researcher or volunteer who can do in and look them up for me? I believe at this time Grant's s Pass was considered Jackson Co. Thank you! Marianne S. Monagle monagle@cncdsl.com
Hi Marianne, I live in Grants Pass, OR and a member of the local Genealogy Society. If you could give me more information on your ancestors maybe I can help. Gary V. Thank you! Josephine County was created in 1856. Grants Pass was right on the border between Jackson and Josephine County until 1885, when Josephine County gained area from Jackson County and Grants Pass ended up clearly in Josephine County. I think it is definitely worthwhile checking records in both counties during your time frame, unless someone with research experience can answer the question definitively.
