The interesting thing about October 11th, 1582, is that it never happened. In 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII reworked the calendar, Thursday October 4th, 1582 was followed by Friday, October 15th, 1582. Not only that, but the New Year was moved from March 25th to January 1st. Most countries, including the U.S. were using the Julian calendar. Not for another 200 years, would Gregory's calendar be in general usage in the U.S. For that reason, be apprised that anytime you see a date such as 1684/85, the person was born in 1684 under the Julian Calendar, but 1685 under our new Calendar. Plus, if born under the Julian Calendar, days need to be subtracted since days were lost when converting to the Gregorian. Back in the 1700's, many people didn't put birth dates on tombstones. One reason they didn't is because no one knew what calendar to use. Tombstone inscriptions were put with the deceased's death date, and having lived so many years, months and days. That is fortunate for us, for we can subtract those things, and arrive at the TRUE DATE OF BIRTH, which probably isn't the same date as registered in the family Bibles or church records. ===== With best wishes, Jim Schira __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
