Surnames: Rees, Baumgartner Sister M. Ann Clarisse (Mary Baumgartner), 97, a former resident of The Dalles, died on January 6, 2002 in Portland. She was born in Heggenschwill, Switzerland on October 25, 1904. In 1909 the family moved from Switzerland to The Dalles to take up residence on her grandfather's homestead. The family of eight children grew up in a religious household. She received her grade and high school education at St. Mary's Academy in The Dalles, graduating in 1924. She received her B.A. from Holy Names College in Spokane (Washington). For 45 years she taught in the primary grades in schools in Portland, Salem, Bend and Coos Bay in Oregon and in Spokane, Everett and Seattle in Washington. In 1971 she took up residence at the Provincial House, Marylhurst, where she assisted in the Care Center and Stamp Bureau where she meticously cut and sorted canceled stamps in preparation for their sale. The money earned was given to the Retirement Fund. On October 6 of last year she celebrated 75 years of religious profession with her community. She is survived by her sister Gertrude Rees, several nieces and nephews and members of her religious community. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, January 11, in the Provincial House Chapel at Marylhurst.
