Sacramento Evening Bee Tuesday, February 28, 1905 MISSING SHASTA PRISONER SERVING OREGON SENTENCE REDDING (Shasta Co.), February 28 - George BRANNAN, who escaped from the Shasta County Jail with Oscar KOHLSDORFF on June 2, 1901, is in the penitentiary at Salem, Ore., doing time for stealing horses in Klamath County in that State. As soon as he is let out, he will be brought back to Shasta County to face the double charge of horse stealing and jail breaking. He is in the Oregon penitentiary under the name of James Smith. The discovery has just been made by Sheriff RICHARDSON, of Shasta County. He wrote the Oregon prison authorities yesterday to notify him when Smith was about to be released, and he would be on hand with the proper requisition papers and claim the prisoner. OREGON ON FIRE OFF CRESCENT CITY HARBOR CRESCENT CITY (Del Norte Co.), February 28 - The steel ship Oregon, running between Portland and San Francisco, is on fire off Crescent City harbor, and her passengers have been landed here by the steamer Del Norte. The Oregon, which was loaded with a cargo of miscellaneous freight, caught fire yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The cargo has been badly damaged, but it is expected that the vessel will be out of danger this afternoon. SAN FRANCISCO, February 28 - The Oregon is a staunch steamer of 2835 tons freight capacity, built in 1877 by J. ROACH & Son, of Chester, Pa. She is owned by the White Star Steamship Company, of Seattle, but is under charter to the Portland and San Francisco Steamship Company. She left this port last Sunday with a large number of passengers and a full cargo.
