    3. The Dalles Chronicle February 24, 2002 20 Years Ago, February 24, 1982 The layoff of 17 men and 43 at Goldendale (Washington) was confirmed at Martin Marietta Aluminum Corporation Tuesday. The layoff is effective immediately with no characterization by the company of whether it is permanent or temporary. Jack Harper, head of community relations for Northwest operations, said the process of notifying affected employees has been going on for three weeks. A prospective candidate for school board in Antelope (Oregon) does not meet the residency requirements and her application has been returned, the Wasco County Clerk's Office said Wednesday afternoon. Wendy Wyatt, a resident of the Big Muddy Ranch, owned by the followers of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, had applied for qualifying papers and left a filing fee with the clerk's office on Monday. A spray plane that was unable to get airborne at the end of an air strip in Wasco (Oregon) landed on a side street and did some damage before it struck a tree around 8 (a.m.) Wednesday morning. The plane, piloted by Dick Richelderfer of Wasco and owned Decker Air Ag, was extensively damaged in the incident, but Richelderfer was not injured. 40 Years Ago, February 24, 1962 Volunteer Captain James Ruzic of The Dalles fire department was elected vice president of the Mid-Columbia Mutual Aid Association at a meeting last night in Hood River. Chief Charles Roth Jr., Bob Stanek, Merle Davis, Robert Wheeler, Earl Estes, Jerry Urnes and Bill Wilson also attended the meeting. Coach Don Martin of The Dalles Indians was carried off the Indian floor Friday night after The Dalles won their final Intermountain League game of the season over visiting Prineville (Oregon) 57-46. By virtue of the Indians win and Pendleton (Oregon) bowing to second place Hermiston (Oregon) 71-57, the Indians nailed down third place. George Stadelman Jr. is the new president of the Wasco County Young Republicans, having been elected at the last meeting of the organization. Other officers for the coming year are Gary N. Johnson, vice president; Betty Bellamy, secretary; and Pat Perry, treasurer. 60 Years Ago, February 24, 1942 Sheriff Harold Sexton said today that he has advised farmers in the Three Mile district to shoot dogs which have been killing domestic animals in that region. Several complaints have been received that pig kills (by) dogs are in that area, he said. 80 Years Ago, February 24, 1922 Plans for the reorganization of the French & Company Bank, which was closed yesterday and placed in the hands of Frank C. Bramwell, state superintendent of banks, are progressing satisfactory, it was announced today by E.H. French, president of the institution. French departed today for Portland on business in connection with the reorganization plans and it will be a few days before a formal announcement will be made regarding the reopening of the bank, he said. Twelve "sleepers", the largest number in several weeks, last night were given free lodging at the city jail. The number of itinerants coming through has increased considerably within the last few days, probably due to the annual exodus of this element from the larger cities, as soon as the spring farm work starts up, Chief of Police Heater said. W.A. Johnson and J.S. Jenson will leave this evening or early Saturday morning for Portland to attend the cermonial of Al Kader temple. The first session will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock and the second session at 8 p.m. The ceremonial will be held in municipal auditorium.
