The Dalles Chronicle February 3, 2002 Looking Back is compiled weekly by Elroy King of the Chronicle staff. 20 Years Ago, February 3, 1982 The appointment of a consultant to evaluate the present education program of districts 9 and 12 is the next step for the proposed reorganization of the districts. Following a 90 minute meeting here Tuesday night with the board members from the Wasco County Educational Service District, District 9 and 12, ESD Supertindent Dr. Fred Krauss said selection of the consultant was the next major step. The meeting was in response to the filing of petitions bearing 3,000 names of people asking the ESD to conduct the reorganization study. A reduced water rate for senior citizens in The Dalles may go onto a ballot May 18. At the request of City Councilman Gary Kopperud Monday night, the council agreed to form a study committee to prepare a ballot measure. A one story house at 2109 W. Ninth Place was gutted by a fire of undetermined causes this morning, but no one was home at the time of the fire. Wasco Rural Fire District officials said they had determined the occupant was Laurie Conyers, but they had not been able to contact her by 12:15 p.m. 40 Years Ago, February 3, 1962 Three men from The Dalles will attend the radiological monitoring school at Alameda, California February 12-18. Taking the course will be Irv Reierson, sanitarian for Wasco-Sherman County public Health Department; Lt. Robert Wilson of The Dalles Fire Department, and Henry Rassi, chemist at the Harvey Aluminum Plant. Reierson will serve as head radiological officer for Wasco County while Wilson will instruct city firemen and policemen in monitoring of radioactive fallout. The Dalles made it two in a row in a wrestling program here Friday night, winning seven events to post a 31-17 victory. DHS teammates voted the best effort award to John Greene, whose match with Bruce Davies, ended in a draw. Dalles Coach Dick Yecny was without the services of a couple of his regulars last night. 60 Years Ago, February 3, 1942 All visual aids now located on roofs of buildings throughout Wasco County for the purpose of guiding aerial navigation must be removed, J. Tracy Barton, Wasco County Civil Defense coordinator, Monday told members of the defense council meeting in city hall. Street maintenance crews today began erecting new street markers in downtown intersections under the direction of city engineer Homer S. Wall. One hundred and twelve metal signs will be placed in 29 street intersections. On completion of the downtown streets the crews will install 253 markers in the residential areas. 80 Years Ago, February 3, 1922 T.V. Allen and C.B. Church of Portland have opened a store in the Condon building, 218 1/2 Third Street, for the sale of woolen good remnants bought up from the woolen mills of the states. Members of the Chenowith Grange appeared before the county court yesterday afternoon to explain why their dance hall license should not be revoked on account of alleged disorderly conduct in the hall on the night before Christmas. M. Thornton and E.G. Fitzgerald told of the orderly dances which they had always had until the occasion when a party of six young men, who were said to be partially drunk, came out from The Dalles. 100 Years Ago, February 2, 1902 Yesterday, Dr. J.A. Reuter, arrived in the city and has formed a partnership with Dr. Ferguson, both in the hospital and office work. Dr. Reuter comes with the best of recommendations and they will make a strong combination in medical circles. The doctor was a classmate of Dr. E.E. Ferguson and was graduated with him from the Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1897.
