Hi, good question. My father also was in the first WW and he was in the navy, ended up on a ship in NY, the USS SanDiego. I know no more - and he of course is not alive, he would be 104 if he were. I will check his military records that I have. My mother had several uncles from Montana in WWI and they took their training at Fort Lewis, in WA. Also a book I have on Morrow County tells of the men who went from here, and mentions Fort Lewis also. I have read newspaper articles from Oregon at that time, and they mention Camp Merrill, NJ. Is this correct? I imagine they would be rounded up and put on a train to NJ then after short training course, then ship out. > Anyone out there know about Oregon soldiers in WWI? I would love to know more details of their enlisting and transport procedure.
