The Atlanta Braves Tuesday purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Ken Dayley from Richmond of the International League. Dayley, who pitched at The Dalles High School and the University of Portland had a 4-2 record and a 3.11 earned run average with Richmond when he was called up. Choral awards for The Dalles High School's vocal music department were made during the spring concert Tuesday night at the high school auditorium. Pat Wiese won the Arion Foundation Award, which is given annually by the Cascade Singers. Jim Buzan made the presentation. The two winners of the National School Choral Awards were Sander Smith and DuAnne Henkle. 40 Years Ago, May 12, 1962 Reserved space on the special train that will leave The Dalles for the World's Fair city of Seattle (Washington) in June is "filling fairly rapidly" according to A.O. (Buzz) DeFrate, assistant manager of The Dalles Chamber of Commerce. The air conditioned trains compartments will serve as the fair visitor's residences during the two days in Seattle while the car's are berthed at Seattle's Union Station. Seattle buses leave from the station to the monorail core center or go to the fairgrounds. No meals are provided. 80 Years Ago, May 12, 1922 A steel and concrete bridge, absolutely fireproof, of the Luten arch type of construction, was yesterday afternoon selected by directors and stockholders of The Dalles-Oregon-Washington Toll Bridge company from three sets of preliminary plans under consideration for the span across the Columbia River near Seufert's. President George A. Sears of the Union Bridge company, presented three sets of plans drawn by engineers of his company from surveys made on the ground. The type of bridge selected will cost about $365,350 according to the engineers estimate, Sears said. The Union Bridge company will next go ahead with selection of the exact site.
