Hi again Sue, Your John Jacobs sounds like a very interesting man. You do have some interesting research ahead of you! I think rootsweb also offers an email list for wagon trains, & for surnames also, maybe someone has info to share with you, check out _www.ancestry.com_ (http://www.ancestry.com) too. Rootsweb also has a message forum for surnames as does _www.genforum.com_ (http://www.genforum.com) it's Search link at the top of the web page offers a "Family Finder Search." Also, one I am weary of is the LDS site at _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) I have found many family members listed there, but their info is not totally accurate for everyone. At the LDS site I typed in to search John Jacobs & enterred the year 1840, then opted for plus or minus 20 years & got 183 resluts, there is also options to choose a state. Please let us know if you have any fortune in finding your family info. It's encouraging to us all. Wishing you all the best in your research! Teresa ----- 9/5/2006 5:38:29 P.M. I was simply googling "john jacobs" and didn't get the search results that I did when I used your approach. A lot of what is on the web are sources that I have already looked at. John Jacobs disappears from the historical record in 1865-66. He pops into the record around 1850. Sources say he was an"old mountain man" and fur trader. In 1863 he and John Bozeman forged what became the Bozeman Trail. So, my quest is to find some evidence of his early life and what happened to him in 1866. His daughter(from Flathead wife) was 8 when she accompanied Bozeman and her father in forging the trail. I have some evidence she died in 1865. THis evidence is only one source. Anyway, my thought is to try and find other sources from those who traveled with him when he guided the wagon trains across the trail. I have read the published diaries, which basically say the same thing that is on the net. Thanks for your help, trying a new way of searching has opened new possibilities.
