    3. The Dalles Chronicle November 21, 2001 21Years Ago, November 25, 1980 Wasco County is seeking to amend the state law on certification of sheriffs, County Judge Rick Cantrell said this morning. A resolution originating with the Wasco County Court went through the Association of Oregon Counties (AOC) convention which ended Friday and is headed to legislative committee, Cantrell said. Specifically, the county wants the law to permit people to be elected sheriff and be admitted to the police academy if elected. A start-up of a wind power project on the Ed Hoctor Ranch (Goodnoe Hills) near Goldendale (Washington) has been rescheduled for the week of December 9, Gene Tollefson, public information officer for the Bonneville Power Administration said today. The actual date and time of the start-up will depend on wind conditions. Work on the project is slightly behind schedule, he said. Wilkinson appointed an attorney this morning for James Hugh Taylor, charged with second degree murder in the strangling here Tuesday, of Gordon E.A. Donaldson, a local handyman. Judge Wilkinson appointed attorney Edgar Dick to represent Taylor, who was bound over to the Wasco County Grand Jury Wednesday afternoon after he waived preliminary hearing. Larry Shannon and Terry Ziegler defeated MAC champs in overweight boxing matches Wednesday evening at the Armory (The Dalles.)Ziegler, state 70-pound titilist had too many bombs for Bobby Smith, state 80-pound champion. Shannon, after taking a solid beating from Ron Sunseri, state 112-pound champion, in the first round came back strong in the second and blasted out a TKO (technical knock out) victory. Sunseri immediately demanded a rematch and AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) official Al Evans has scheduled them to meet again December 2 on television in Portland. 60 Years Ago, November 25, 1941 Being held in The Dalles today for the as yet unidentified owner is a small cardboard package containing the cremated remains of William Offield, address unknown, which was found yesterday beside the old Oregon Trail Highway, approximately three miles east of The Dalles. The package was discovered by one of a crew from Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company linemen Tuesday morning. It was lodged near a fence on the south side of the highway and just east of the overhead crossing located this side of Celilo (Oregon). St. Mary's academy opened its 1941-42 basketball season in successful fashion last night, defeating Moro (Oregon) high school's cage quintet 23-14 in fast paced game played at Kurtz gymnasium (The Dalles) Harold Neimeyer paced the Gaels with 11 points in the four quarters of competition. Shipley had 5 points for Moro. 80 Years Ago, November 25, 1921 Numerous residents of The Dalles who were stranded in Portland or at various places along the Columbia highway during the storm, arrived in the city yesterday afternoon at 4:20 on the J.N. Teal in time for belated Thanksgiving dinners. They told exciting stories of their experiences. About 175 passengers were on the steamer Teal, many of whom were local people, some were from Sherman County (Oregon) points and some were from Dufur (Oregon). 100 Years Ago, November 25, 1901 The young ladies of The Dalles will give a Thanksgiving party at the Baldwin opera house Thursday night for the benefit of The Dalles football team. The Birgfeld orchestra of twelve pieces will furnish the music. The bowling on the alleys of The Dalles commercial club seems to have taken a new lease on life. On Saturday evening, Victor Schmidt broke the club record by bowling 81 points. The former record was held by Mr. Bonn, who made 80 a few years ago.
