    3. The Dalles Chronicle November 18, 2001 Assembled by Elroy King 21 Years Ago, November 18, 1980 Both sides of the Columbia Gorge would benefit from "rational federal management" Multnomah County Executive Don Clark said today. He announced a plan to form a committee to ask Congress to designate the gorge as a national scenic area. He said such designation is the only way to preserve the area from development. Three members of fall sports teams at Judson Baptist College (The Dalles) have received special honors for their efforts during the 1980 season. Kent Holloway, a junior striker from Sherwood (Oregon), has been named to the National Little College all star soccer team, according to the NLC newsletter. Sophomore Jane Milne and freshman Vicki Bays were selected to the all star tournament first team at the National Invitational Little College tournament held last weekend at Trinity Western College at Langley, British Columbia. (Chronicle Editor note: The file for the last quarter of 1981 has turned up missing, so the year differs on segment of Looking Back.) 40 Years Ago, November 18, 1961 The Dalles apparently has not been affected by the virus sweeping other nearby schools, according to Alvin Unruh, assistant superintendent. Wy'east High School in Odell (Oregon) reported 200 students absent Friday out of 530 enrolled. Jeannie Harn of The Dalles is one of five candidates for Homecoming Queen at the University of Oregon. Miss Harn, a 20-year-old junior majoring in elementary education, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Harn. She is a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and her activities include Kwama, ASUO Election Board, Phi Theta Upsillon and SU classics committee. 60 Years Ago, November 18, 1941 Wasco County's Red Cross roll-call for 1942 has produced 494 individual members and has raised a total of $810.20 up until last night, it was learned here today. The figures are based on incoming returns from teams now soliciting funds within the city limits of The Dalles and do not include monies received from rural areas, according to Joe D. Tomison, roll call publicity chairman. The lower grade room at the Rowena (Oregon) school was the first group to form a 4-H club this fall. This club will be a health club, with George Martin as president; Barbara Meatte, vice-president; Sharon Means, secretary; and Mary Austin, reporter. Mrs. Stella Gronewald was chosen as the leader. Glen Wright and Jack Campbell are the other members. Miss Betty Jane Welborn started work yesterday at U.S. National Bank in the bookkeeping department. She was graduated from The Dalles High School last June. 80 Years Ago, November 18, 1921 One hundred and fifty shingles from Old Fort Dalles, each shingle bearing a picture of the old fort, will be offered for sale in The Dalles at $1 apiece by members of the Old Fort Dalles Historical Society it was announced today. The 150 shingles are all that remain of the original 10,000 that once protected the surgeons quarters of the old fort from the elements. Each was made by hand. 100 Years Ago, November 18, 1901 Willie Edwards, the little nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Carnaby, learned yesterday by sad experience that a cigar cutter will cut other things besides the ends of cigars. While examining a cigar cutter in the candy store next to the American market the boy put his finger in the little hole and was surprised to have the fleshy part of that member snapped off in less than a jiffy. The cut extends to the middle of the fingernail and just barely missed the bone.
