    3. Surnames: Hands, Van Cleave Jim Frederick Hands, 78, a resident of The Dalles, formerly of Portland, died at the Oregon Veterans Home (The Dalles), on Wednesday, April 10, 2002. He was born to Lawrence P. Winters and Jessie Elaine Hands. He served on the USS Lexington, USS Rogue and USS Battan. After the service, he worked briefly for the U.S. Postal Service. His lifelong work was as a professional thoroughbred race horse trainer in California, Washington and throughout the Southern United States before settling in Oregon. He was a life member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). He is survived by a niece Connie Van Cleave and friends including Dan Larue, Portland and all of his friends at the Oregon Veterans Home. Graveside services will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Oregon Veterans Home Trust Fund, 700 Veteran Drive, The Dalles, Oregon 97058.
