    1. [OREGON] Looking Back-A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files
    2. Pete Wasser
    3. The Dalles Chronicle April 21, 2002 Looking Back is compiled weekly by Elroy King. 20 Years Ago, April 21, 1982 Kelly McCarger of Mosier (Oregon) has received his Eagle Scout ranking. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin McCarger and he is attending the University of Oregon. Kelly is a 1981 graduate of Wahtonka High School (The Dalles). He became a member of Cub Scout Pack 374 in 1971. 40 Years Ago, April 21, 1962 A light plane curved under a power line, hit the gravel just outside the driveway of the Howard Weathers home about a mile south of the Hood River city limits and skidded more than 100 feet before coming to rest at the edge of the the field Friday afternoon. The pilot, Thomas l'Anson of Seattle (Washington), was unhurt. He received a slight abrasion - not even a cut - on his finger. Remodeling at the present Salvation Army headquarters, 623 E. Third Street, has forced a temporary move to 212 Washington Street. Lieutenant Nels R. Nelson reported that all welfare and church activities will take place at the temporary location throughout most of the summer months. 60 Years ago, April 21, 1942 Three men were injured, one seriously yesterday afternoon when a northbound S.P.& S.(Seattle, Portland & Spokane) railroad train crashed through a flame swept bridge trestle, approximately 21 miles south of Wishram (Washington), piling up 10 loaded freight cars like cordwood and blocking the Oregon trunk line to further traffic for several days. Most painfully hurt was the brakeman, Lawrence Mohler, who suffered a compound fracture of the right ankle when he leaped from the fast moving locomotive. 80 Years Ago, April 21, 1922 Chang Hong, an aged Chinese cannery worker is dead, and Or Ching, a Portland man, is held in the county jail on an open charge as a result of a tong war flare up in The Dalles last night. The shooting took place in front of the Wing Yuen company store at 208 First Street about 3:15. Hong, who lived in the little room above the store, although he was not connected with it in any way, had apparently stepped outside the door with nothing but slippers on his feet, to breathe the evening air. Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Bowen, 1313 Pine street, returned to The Dalles Wednesday after an automobile trip to southern California, which they began last September. The Bowens, carried camping equipment with them and enjoyed a winter visiting in various places in or near Santa Fe, California. 100 Years Ago, April 21, 1902 Participants in the dance given by Sandvig at the Baldwin Saturday night seemed to be making up for lost time. At any rate the dancers had a splendid time. The crowd was just the right size and the music, furnished by Bert Baldwin, good, while everyone present was in a mood to enjoy themselves. We understand that Mr. Sandvig expects to give another party this week. The streams in this vicinity are not to be forgotten in the distribution of Eastern Brook Trout. Deputy game and forestry warden, L. Fritz, will receive 10,000 through A.E. Gebhardt, secretary of the Oregon Game Association from the U.S. fish commissioners. He will place 4000 in Fifteen Mile creek above Dufur (Oregon); 3000 in Upper Eight Mile and 3000 above the falls at Mile (Mill?) creek These trout are protected by law until 1904 and fishermen will have to look out for them. Written permission to reprint Looking Back - A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon. Copied and submitted by Earline Wasser.
