The couple was raised in the Glenfield-Sutton area of North Dakota. Don and Esther were married on March 31, 1952, in Moorehead, Minnesota, while Don was home on furlough from the U.S. Army. They lived in the Fargo-West Fargo area until 1966, when they moved to The Dalles. They have spent most of the last 36 years in Portland and The Dalles, where they currently reside. Don retired in 1992 from the plumbing trade, and now he and Esther enjoy life at home, with the frequent company of their four children, 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. They are members of the American Legion Post in The Dalles, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of West Fargo, North Dakota, (Don is a veteran of the Korean War), and the Moose Lodge. Don and Esther celebrated their Golden Anniversary at home on Easter Sunday (March 31) with their family. On April 6, they celebrated with friends and family at the American Legion.
