    3. June 23, 2002 The Dalles Chronicle 20 Years Ago, June 23, 1982 The Northern Wasco County Public Utilities District directors Tuesday officially accepted the resignation of member John Bauer, who is moving from The Dalles, and took under consideration four applications for his post. On motion of director Bob Proffit, the appointment was delayed to allow directors to interview candidates. Applicants on file are Dr. Milt Skov, veterinarian and former mayor of The Dalles; Dr. John Fizzell, a former county agent and now employed by Century 21 Realty; Rick Bernards, owner of a dental laboratory; and Mrs. Harriet Lewis, part time secretary at Zion Lutheran Church. 80 Years Ago, June 23, 1922 Wasco County cherries are now going east daily in carload lots, shipped by the Oregon Growers Cooperative and P.J. Stadelman. Two cars have been sent out today by the growers, made up entirely or Royal Annes. One car was shipped last night. Manager C.R. Thompson said that he expected to have another car of Royal Annes ready for shipping tonight. With the jury seated and opening arguments completed yesterday afternoon, the trial of Chin Sic on a first degree murder charge was started in dead earnest in circuit court this morning. Details of the shooting on the night of April 20, in which Chang Hong, an aged cannery worker, believed to have been a member of the Hip Sing tong, was killed, were brought out by a number of witnesses who were placed on the stand. A fine was paid in the police court this morning by Ben Mullen, who became so enthusiastic at the boxing contests last night that he climbed into the ring and attempted to assist one of the fighters with liquid refreshment. Mullen was arrested on a charge of drunkenness. Written permission to reprint Looking Back: A Glimpse Through the Chronicle's Files given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon. Copied and submitted by Earline Wasser.
