    3. The Dalles Chronicle, June 2, 2002 Looking Back is assembled weekly from the files of The Chronicle by Elroy King and Elly Marx. 20 Years Ago, June 2, 1982 A 30-day residency requirement in order to vote in Oregon conflicts with the U.S. Constitution and the Antelope (Oregon) disincorporation election of April stands. Wasco County Circuit Court Judge John Jelderks Tuesday afternoon said that the U.S. Supreme Court in 1972 had laid the foundation for this ruling when it threw out residency requirements in a Tennessee case. A group of Wasco County residents have chartered a Citizens Posse Comitatus and a spokesman said their efforts will be to assure constitutional rights of individuals are protected. Spokesman LaMont Jones of The Dalles noted the posse draws its power from the federal constitution, that the local group would fight its battle over rights through the courts and would help individuals see their rights are protected. Mark Steinberg was the overall men's division winner and Traci KaHoe the women's division champion of the Lyle (Washington) Pioneer Day's 7.2 mile road race held Sunday. 60 Years Ago, June 2, 1942 What to do in an air raid: 1.) In any air raid or backlut, take cover immediately. If you are away from home, get off the street. If you are at home, take immediate blackout precautions. 2.) Don't use the telephone. Remember those persons who have been trained to protect you. Your personal calls have got to wait until the all-clear signal. 3.) If you are caught in the open, lay on your stomach. 4.) If incendiary bombs fall, play a course spray of water on them. Put out the fires started by the incendiaries first, then devote your attention to the bomb. 5.) Remember obey your air raid warden and other members of the United States citizens defense corps, they are trying to help you. 6.) Above all, keep cool, stay home, put out lights, take shelter, lie down, stay away from windows. You can help. (This has been approved by the civilian protection division of the United States office of civilian defense.) 80 Years Ago, June 2, 1922 Veteran's suicide effort unsuccessful: Strychnine did not work fast enough yesterday afternoon, when Tom Bonner, about 30, attempted to commit suicide in a room in a Bank hotel, with the result that after a thorough pumping out at The Dalles hospital, he is today but slightly the worse for wear. Mis-step on stairs: Mrs. George Marsh, 115 West Third street, suffered a fracture of the right leg above her hankle yesterday when she made a mis-step while going down the stairs at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Foley on Fourth street. She was taken to the local hospital. 100 Years Ago, June 2, 1902 Election at The Dalles: While The Dalles decided by its vote yesterday that Chamberlain was its choice for governor, so it seems did the greater part of the state, for it is conceded now that his plurality will be about 1000, although at last reports Furnish was forging ahead and a dispatch from Multnomah (county) said in twenty four precints the democratic nominee was but 1 ahead; there were, however, ten precincts to hear from.
