He was transferred from the Arlington (Oregon) office, where he has been since 1978. 40 Years Ago, March 3, 1962 Approximately 250 firemen from all parts of the state had registered by midforenoon in Arlington (Oregon) for the fire school, the instruction for which will be provided by the burning of a number of buildings that must be cleared in connection with the relocation project. First building to be set ablaze was the Methodist church parsonage, near the church building that was erected in 1878 and itself tabbed for destruction by fire. {Relocation made necessary by back waters of The Dalles Dam}. Dan P. McLoughlin of The Dalles has filed his candidacy for the new district judge position to be created in Wasco County. McLoughlin, a resident here for many years, filed his candidacy in Salem (Oregon). Earlier, local attorney Vern Burda, filed for the judgeship. 60 Years Ago, March 3, 1942 Appointment of J.B. Kirk and J.B. Hemanek, respectively as vice commanders of the Wasco County civil defense council were effected yesterday afternoon at the regular semimonthly meeting of the organization, held in the city council chambers at the city hall. Selected by Commander Norval H. Martin, Judge Kirk will have supervision of all Wasco County territory outside The Dalles proper while Hermanek was selected to supervise activities inside The Dalles. Arrested by city police yesterday were Millard R. Minor, 23, and Shelby H. Merritt, 23, both of whom are charged with being deserters from the United States army at Fort Lewis, Washington. The youths are being held in the city jail pending their return to the encampment. 80 Years Ago, March 3, 1922 One of the oldest clothing businesses in The Dalles has finally passed from the family of J.P. McInerny. Announcement was made today that Joseph McInerny had sold his store at 203 Second Street to Simon and Benjamin Cohen and they have taken possession immediately. Until about a year ago, J.P. McInerny operated his business, and upon his retirement it was taken in hand by his son. Robert A. Twiss was elected last night to the position of exalted ruler of The Dalles Lodge No. 303 B.P.O.E., succeeded retiring Exalted Ruler Roy F. Taylor. Other officers elected were R.C. Bradshaw, esteemed leading knight; Dr. Thompson Coberth, esteemed loyal knight; Simon Cohen, esteemed lecturing knight; W.L. Crichton, secretary; H.W. Scherrer, treasurer; John Will, trustee, three years; George Fitzgerald, tiler; Roy F. Taylor, delegate to grand lodge, Atlantic City; H.C. Kuck, alternate. 100 Years Ago, March 3, 1902 It was the intention of the Methodist of this city to close revival services last night and Evangelist Martin expected to leave tonight for Spokane (Washington); but such an intense interest was manifested at the meeting yesterday that it seemed impossible to call a halt and they will continue through Wednesday at least. The church wa crowded at both services yesterday, and a large number of seekers made their wasy to the altar and some professed conversion. F.G. Oster, formerly of Pendleton (Oregon), is in this city representing a new insurance order, the Royal Highlanders. He will organize a lodge at The Dalles and then also will establish one in Pendleton.
