The Dalles Chronicle March 24, 2002 Looking Back is compiled each week by Elroy King 20 Years Ago, March 24, 1982 About 80 disciples of transplanted Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh face possible deportation by federal immigration officials who turned down their pleas for an extension of six month tourist visas. Robert Kruger, Portland, district director of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization service, said notices of that denial were mailed this week to 72 adults and seven children among the 280 followers of the guru that settled on a 60,000 acre ranch in central Oregon. A special meeting of the Antelope City Council is scheduled for tonight to discuss litigation involving the town's land use laws, the town's call for an April 15 election to dissolve the city charter and other matters. Meanwhile, 47 people are now registered for that election and more registrations are arriving daily. Jeff Justensen hammered a triple and home run and threw five innings of three hit ball to lead Sherman County to a 5-0 non league prep baseball victory over Corbett on Tuesday afternoon. 40 Years Ago, March 24, 1962 The coachless Dalles Outlaw volleyball team had nothing but troubles when the local women lost four straight games in the jamboree at Sherman County High School Thursday night. Moro won the jamboree with four wins, followed by Lyle (Washington), Goldendale (Washington) and Sherman County. Sally Brown of Moro scored 21 points. Peggy Miller of Sherman scored 13, Phyllis Goree of Goldendale scored and Dona Taylor of Lyle each scored 11 and Barbara Gregory and Irene Mead each of The Dalles scored eight apiece, the high scorers for each team. Nielson, instructors in home nursing classes, have announced that there is room for a few more women in their classes. Studies will be resumed at the library now that it has reopened. Mrs. C.L. Poley will begin her home nursing classes for women in the Maupin (Oregon) district in the near future. The classes will be held at Tygh Valley (Oregon) instead of in Maupin as previously announced. 80 Years Ago, March 24, 1922 Only the fact that the protecting shores of the state of Washington are so close at hand yesterday saved W.H. Rochelle, traveling retail salesman of men's and women's clothing from arrest and probably a stiff fine. A warrant for Rochelle's arrest was sworn out yesterday afternoon by H.S. Rice, J.A. Tedford and O.R. Krier, representing the businessmen of the city and also the chamber commerce, upon a charge of peddling without a license. Armed with the warrant, Mototcycle Patrolman Bud Crofton set out in search of the salesman, only to discover that he, apparently anticipating some such action, had just cross to Grand Dalles (Dallesport, Washington) by the ferry. 100 Years Ago, March 24, 1902 President Lytle of the Columbia Southern stated today that some sixty miles of the new extension of that road, from its present terminus at Shaniko (Oregon) to Bend (Oregon) have already been located. This leaves only 40 miles still unlocated. Winter made his Sunday night call on Spring last night and his footprints were visible this morning, particularity on the mountains and hills, surrounding us. The thermometer stood at 28. It is feared that effects of his visit will be felt by the fruit, as the rain yesterday left it in bad condition for the frost to strike it. The rainfall in the city was .24 of an inch. A.S. MacAllister left for his ranch in Wheeler County last Friday without saying a word to The Chronicle force or asking our permission. He goes to look after his stock interests and will remain for some time.
