I guess my Question to Earline is... Did some one in authority forbid you to transcribe and post these newspaper obits and articles? ie... was it a society, the newspaper or the listowner???? Was it a personal request? Because if it was a personal request/demand for you not to do this most excellent work ... I am replying to people off list regarding this matter. I'll say this...it's been mentioned "if necessary, I will contact a lawyer." Well, I want to contact my lawyer and be assured that no one can come back in future years to haunt me regarding something that I've submitted to these mail lists. I read the copyright information but it is as clear as mud in most instances. If I get an answer that reassures me from my lawyer...I will be back. I can understand your wish to talk about this matter off line... But your are bringing up issues that are important to the genealogist, family history writer, and genealogy extractor. I do a lot of work with yearbooks and last Saturday nite I nearly got into a bruhaha with a person at my favorite copy shop.... I was giving a lecture on "yearbooks" for a historical society. I had 11 books and all but two of them were before 1978. I wanted an average of 3 pictures from each book. made into transparancies and this gal (will never get invited to tea at my house... ever) didn't want to do it... I knew my rights and I got my transparancies ... but words amd concepts like public domain fair use copyright and the importance of privacy issues are worth any groups time to discuss ...
