I know Earline doesn't want to discuss this on Oregon-List but it does effect all of us... Apparently there was a privacy issue... someone was still living who was mentioned in an obituary... and that's the the complaint... In the past 9 years I've been involved with privacy discussions/debates/arguments... and it is pretty polarized. The LDS church privacy policy is 90 years... the Federal gov. is 70 years... and the State of Texas didn't have one. I like obituaries... I like them because usually Married daughters are listed with that wonderful married name and current location, that parents and spouses are listed again with current location, affiliations, churches... I like obituaries... because generally the newspaper did 'em for free and most newspapers don't mind them beinging used by genealogists for genealogy purposes. So basically... the only issue is privacy... and the people mentioned in the obituary provided the information to be published... it is my opinion that obituaries are important and should be harvested for genealogy research... that most people will be unable to get a copy of the newspaper... so placing obits online on permanent sites... is like doin' good work. I would be hoping that Earline isn't just sending her obits to list but is sending a copy to the USGenWeb Project County pages and to the USGenWeb Archives... and that she is sending a copy to the society's webpages and... maybe creating a folder for the local public library... Earline did the right thing by the complaintant by trying to get the offending obituary removed. She should now do the right thing for all of us Genealogists <g> by continuing her work... See what happens when I climb on a soapbox and then don't edit myself Darilee PS for what it is worth... a family member sent ALL of my work to FTM which published it on one of their CDs... It includes living people... I wasn't happy then and ... still not happy now... but perhaps in 25 years from now when I'm dead and gone... someone will find my work... If they only knew about the situation in Utah yesterday. Police arrested a man for using a dead man's identity. The police was lucky because he recognized the dead man's name. The problem? lack of information about the dead man online. The solution? make available all information possible online and the newspapers have NO qualms about posting the obituaries online and that includes The Dalles newspaper. People bein lying about who they are since before any one can remeber . We have all types of ways people can do this, to many to list. We will have Logans Run before that stops and even then people will pretend to be some one they are not. I say deal with the liars and leave the good people alone. If some one wants an old ID to use, there are a good many to use even if all online stuff was stopped. A few years ago a Portland Library sold ( all) over 1 hundred issues of a genealogy quarterly with all types of information in them for $100 just to any one who had the money... there are just too many sources to get this stuff, and more good people just suffer on learning history for a few bad people who get caught sooner or later. I don't see why we should sanitize society from History just because we have a few bad people Dan ----- Original Message ----- From: "W David Samuelsen" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, April 09, 2005 9:56 AM Subject: Re: [OREGON] No longer transcribing > If they only knew about the situation in Utah yesterday. > > Police arrested a man for using a dead man's identity. > The police was lucky because he recognized the dead man's > name. > > The problem? lack of information about the dead man online. > > The solution? make available all information possible online > and the newspapers have NO qualms about posting the obituaries > online and that includes The Dalles newspaper. > > David Samuelsen ====================
