It is understood that McCreedie paid $1000 for Hughes. Jay Hughes, who first learned to play the National game in the vacant lots in this city, is one of the best pitchers on this coast, and is a valuable acquisition to the Portland team. From newspaperabstracts.com: "Over the years many records regarding our ancestors were lost or destroyed in fires, floods, and other natural disasters. Newspapers contain much information that may not be found elsewhere such as births, marriages, deaths, court notices, land sales, tax notices, businesses, etc. They also hold many glimpses of information in their community news and provide us with fascinating details about the lives of our ancestors. We may find their name in a list of letters at the post office, as a member of a local organization, or even performing in a musical at a local church. We can learn a great deal from reading about our past and in turn we shall have a greater understanding and appreciation for the hardships and triumphs our ancestors endured while building a life in a new land. " I don't know "Thundax" at all. I've don't recall the name as a contributor to the list. But I do know that Earline devoted many hours to helping us know our ancestors in their historical context. It seems she has a most generous and useful life, much more so than many others. Just an observation. Draw your own conclusion. Stories found in the abstracts site mentioned at the beginning of my email have certainly enriched the recording of my family's history! I miss Earline's submissions.
