I have a cabinet photo of my gg grandfather, Austin Howell, that was taken by a photographer in Oregon. However, when putting the photograph into the album, someone trimmed the lower edge and only a portion of the photographer's imprint is left. What I can see is "L CAMPS" "Oregon". The imprint is in the lower right corner of the card, in white on dark grey card. In front of the "L" in the photographer's name is a partial letter that may be "E" or "F". The "C" in "Camps" is very large and completely encircles the "a" and ends at the first peak in the "m" of "Camps". All letters are in capitals, and framed by a decorative squiggle. The word "Oregon" is written in a banner-shaped space, embellished with some decorative squiggles on the lower edge. It appears to me that the full imprint would have included the town, due to the way the state is printed within a banner. The trimmed edge appears to be cut enough to have allowed that much space; it is just as likely that only a first initial is on the imprint. This man was born in IA 1848. Came to OR in 1852, lived in and around the communities of Monroe, Alpine, Belknap Settlement, Benton Co as a child and young man. Moved to Alsea as a young married man (1873) and lived in Waldport, Lincoln Co from about 1883-1898. He then moved to Ashland, Jackson Co, where he lived until his death in 1903. His age in the photo is probably about 50---his long-ish beard and mustache are mostly dark brown (or possibly red, since that is a family trait) while the hair on his head is all grey/silver. This would make it about 1898, about the time he moved to Ashland, but the age is a guess, and he could be as young as 40, with early greying. That's as close as I can get as to time and place. Does anyone have any info on this photographer? An exact name of the studio or photographer would help immensely--a Google search with the letters I know brings up only references to various youth, concentration, church, summer camps. Thank you for your help. Nancie Howell Willey
