He was speaking at the morning session of the summer conference of the Oregon mayor's association being held in The Dalles. An explanation of his plan for economic development in Oregon and his opposition to two measures that will be on the Oregon (?) were the main topics as Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ted Kulongoski appeared before the Oregon Mayor's summer conference being held in The Dalles. 40 Years Ago, August 11, 1962 Taking only 27 strokes each tied Mrs. Wally Kruger and Lillian Schassen for first in The Dalles Country Club Ladies Day Mystery Tournament Thursday. Miss Schassen won the toss. The mystery consisted of four blind holes on each nine, using half handicaps. 60 Years Ago, August 11, 1942 Narrowly escaping drowning in the Columbia River after he had bailed out of his airplane, H.H. McAndle, Portland, owes his life to the quick thinking of Fred Cloe, pilot of the ferry boat which was crossing the river shortly after 10 o'clock this morning. Considerably weakened from swimming and inhalation of water, McAndle admitted he could not have kept above water more than another minute or two when H.C. Nelson, the other man of the ferry, removed him from the water with the aid of ferry passengers. Charles A. Phipps of Eugene, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Phipps of The Dalles, was one of the 36 persons who passed the state bar examination on June 22. Fifty-seven persons took the examination. 80 Years Ago, August 11, 1922 The Portland booster delegation for the 1925 fair will put out their message to residents of Wasco County Saturday night in the big tent of the Sells-Floto circus, which will show here then, according to a message received this afternoon by Chamber Secretary H.L. Watson, from J.L. Gratke, a member of the Portland party. The 20 automobiles fill with fair boosters will leave Portland Saturday morning. Unusually dry weather, and not the Curculio beetle, was responsible for the big drop of prunes from the trees during the last several weeks according to F.M. Gill, field agent for the Oregon Growers Association. It was first feared that the Curculio beetle, which has never before been reported west of the Rocky Mountains, was at work on Wasco county prunes. The Oregon Growers Cooperative Association, through its Wasco County branch, distributed approximately $9,000 to local growers late last week and early this week, according to Manager C.R. Thompson of the local plant. 100 Years Ago, August 11, 1902 Yesterday the Drs. Fergusons went to Portland on the afternoon train, having in their charge the child born at the hospital two weeks ago with an abnormal head. The little one appears to be a healthy child, although it is not thought he can last long.
