Surnames: Nelson, Mathes, Carney, McCambridge, Rudishauser, Jenkins Everett Richard "Swede" Nelson, 86, a former resident of The Dalles, died on August 9, 2002 in Vancouver (Washington) where he had recently relocated to be close to his daughter. He was born November 28, 1915, on a wheat farm in Moscow, Idaho, the son of Swedish immigrants. He graduated from Moscow High School and briefly attended the University of Idaho. He grew up in Northern Idaho. He moved to Portland in his 20's where he worked for Union Pacific Railroad. During that time he met and married Geraldine "Gerrie" Mathes. They resided in The Dalles where he worked for Bell Telephone Company in The Dalles. He was a charter member of The Dalles Country Club and a member of the Breakfast Club. He was also an active bowler and fisherman and enjoyed gardening. In 1962 they moved to Eugene (Oregon) where he was a supervisor for Pacific Northwest Bell. He was a member of the Eugene Elks, Telephone Pioneers, Vada Lodge and Springfield (Oregon) Kiwanis. His interests were SkyCamp, a Kiwanis sponsored outdoor education camp which he helped conceive, raise funds for and build. He was also a lifelong University of Idaho Vandals sports fan. After his wife died in 2000, he returned to The Dalles where he resided at Cherry Heights Retirement Home. He again became active in Kiwanis, the railroad retirees and the Wasco County Pioneers. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Arvilla and Thomas Carney, Vancouver; granddaughters, Erin and Cristina Carney, Portland; three sisters, Marie McCambridge, Scappoose (Oregon); Irene Rudishauser and Katherine Jenkins, Portland; two brothers, Carl Nelson, Los Angeles (California); and Harold Nelson, Lewiston, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews. Private graveside services were held at The Dalles IOOF Cemetery. A memorial celebration of his life will be held in the Fireside Room of Civic Auditorium, 323 E. Fourth Street, The Dalles on Saturday, August 17, at 1:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Kiwanis Pocket Park for a bench in his memory, in care of The Dalles Riverfront Trail Bench Project, P.O.
