Surnames: Anderson, Brown, Caton Bernard "Bernie" L. Anderson, 82, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local care facility on Saturday, August 10, 2002. He was born March 18, 1920, in Kemmerer, Wyoming, the oldest of eight children to Luther A. and Vera Louise (Brown) Anderson. He moved to Rigby, Idaho as a young child and graduated from high school there in 1938. He served in the Idaho National Guard from 1938 to 1940, when he went to active duty in the U.S. Army. He served three years in the South Pacific and received the American Defense and Asiatic Pacific medals. He completed his duty tour with the military police, stationed in Portland, and was discharged there on September 3, 1945. He returned to Rigby, where he married Louise Elaine Caton on January 22, 1946. They moved to the Portland area and Bernie worked as a shipping clerk for Physicians & Hospital Supply. After several years, he went to work for the Huntington Rubber Mills for the next 10 years. In 1966, he started with the U.S. General Services Administration as a federal building manager in Enterprise (Oregon), and worked until 1980 when he retired for health reasons. In 1982, the Andersons moved to Maupin (Oregon) and to The Dalles in January 1986. He was a member of the Enterprise First Baptist Church and enjoyed the outdoors, was an avid fisherman and a sketch artist of animals, plants and outdoor scenery. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise, and his daughter, Nancy Anderson, both of The Dalles; his sons, Thomas Anderson, Wallowa (Oregon); and Paul Anderson, Portland; five grandchildren, Adrina, Meredith, Jennifer, Janelle and Aaron; his brothers, Blair, Max, Ted and Aldon and his sister, Marcene. Graveside services will be held at The Dalles Parklawn Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13, with Asa Jenson officiating. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
