I have a family that arrived in OR in Oct 1852. In Dec 1852 Jincy Jane Casner took a DLC in Linn County. I have located her on the 1860 OR Linn County census. I know that at least some of the sons were still in Linn County in 1865. I have been unsuccessful in locating her or any of her 12 sons on the 1870 OR Census. In early 1875 she and several of her sons migrated to AZ arriving there in April 1875. My question is this: How would she have disposed of the land? Where would records of the disposition of the land be located? In Linn Co or in the OR State Archives or elsewhere? Any suggestions on how I might research for disposition of the land would be appreciated.
Elizabeth, if you live in Oregon and are able to go to the County Court House in Albany you can search through the actual old Linn County land records. Jane Casner is in the DLC index. Quite possibly you will find information on the claim itself and on later transactions of her land, if and when she sold it or parts of it. And you should be able to get photocopies of the documents made. I did that for Powell and Crabtree documents. They are a treasure. However, some of the counties have been turning their old documents over to the State. In that case they should be in Salem. Also, in some instances, record keepers are photocopying the records and destroying the old books because, THEY CLAIM, storage space is limited. I don't think that has happened in Oregon, but it is something to think about. What a crime it is when the actual beautiful hand written documents are destroyed. Photocopies are not the same as viewing, or touching the real page. Anne On Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at 09:59 PM, Elizabeth Freeman wrote: > I have a family that arrived in OR in Oct 1852.
