Wasco County Planner Dan Durow said at The Dalles Lions Club meeting on Tuesday. "This is not a good bill at this time," Durow told the club members, reflecting "it could have been at one time." A committee appointed by Mayor John Mabrey to look closely at the entire city budgeting process may slow down to take a look at where it wants to go before it proceeds much further in examining how the city budget is put together and what is in it. The committee met as a whole for the first time Tuesday night and named a chairman, Rev. Del Anderson. Reorganization of four school districts into one was the main topic of the board of directors of Wasco County Union High School during its regular meeting Sept. 8. Districts involved include Wamic Grade School, Tygh Valley Grade School, Maupin Grade School and Wasco County Union High School. 40 Years Ago, September 10, 1966 Ted R. Hoover is the new school superintendent in Arlington (Oregon). In addition to administrative duties he is teaching ninth grade math, general science and earth science. The Hoovers came to Arlington from Paisley (Oregon). Mrs. Hood is teaching second grade at the Arlington grade school. The football season got off to a rather dismal start so far as The Dalles Indians were concerned as they lost their season opener to Wy'East 18-0. The Indians were able to get only one drive going the entire game. Doug Cochran scored twice in the second quarter for the Eagles and Tim Copper added a fourth quarter touchdown. Sherman County scored five touchdowns and racked up nearly 400 yards as they beat Umatilla 33-21 in a season opening football game in Moro Friday night. Dan Jensen scored one touchdown himself and passed for another to spark the SC game. Rick Cantrell gained over 100 yards on the ground and Phil Jones, a fullback, also made large gains. 60 Years Ago, September 10, 1946 United Air Lines plans to inaugurate at The Dalles airport "as close to October 1 as possible" it was reported yesterday at a conference between officials of the airline and Mayor George Stadelman. Here to complete arrangements for the start of air service at the local field were Ted Johnson, assistant regional manager of operations; A.J. Fallon, assistant to the director of property; and E.S. Maroney, in charge of United operations for the Portland area. John L. Sundberg arrived here last week from Portland to assume his new duties as administrator of The Dalles General Hospital. He served four and one half years in the medical administration corps of the Army during the war and was formerly with the Emanuel Hospital in Portland. Classes of The Dalles week day Bible school will begin September 16 in the three public grade schools for pupils in the first six grades, it was announced today. The school is sponsored by a committee of ministers and laymen of eight local churches. 80 Years Ago, September 10, 1926 William Endersby, 82-year-old Wasco County pioneer, died at The Dalles Hospital this morning as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident August 22 at the intersection of Dufur Market road and Rail Hollow roads. George W. Covert, another passenger in the car and a pioneer of Pleasant Ridge, died within a few minutes from injuries received in the wreck. Dalles days at the Sherman County fair drew large crowds of Wasco County people judging from the numbers leaving this morning for the celebration at Moro. The fair was described by those who attended yesterday to be an attractive event, indicating careful management and planning. Cal Wigel, of Aurora, is a guest at the Banks Hotel this week, "Cal" as he is familiarly known to his many friends here, is a pioneer of Wasco County and a member of the Old Wasco County Pioneer Association. As an announcer of old fashioned dance, Mr.Wigel is famous among the old timers, who demand his services each year at the annual program of the association. 100 Years Ago, September 10, 1906 Some time in June the custodians of the Old Fort Dalles building organized themselves into an auxiliary of the state society called the "Old Fort Dalles Historical Society" which is to be governed by the articles of incorporation of the parent society. Their purpose is to study systematically the history of the northwest. Mosier is to have a new two-room school building District 52, which is in the town property, having voted to bond itself for $3,000 for that purpose. They expect to begin work soon and complete the building in November. While riding on his bicycle in front of his home Saturday Charlie Smith, the 12-year-old son of C. Smith, was thrown from the wheel in such a manner as to dislocate the elbow of his right arm. Dr. Geisendorffer was called and soon had the arm in place.
