Well, I'm sure not getting any genealogy done this summer. Just got home from round 1 of my 30 year high school reunion and now am too tired to sleep so I thought I would give every one something to read: From _Oregon Geographic Names_ *Rainbow*, Lane Co. The name of this post office was suggested by Mrs. L. Quimby, whose husband bought the property where the office is situated in May 1922. The office was established July 1, 1924, and closed Aug. 31, 1937 with mail to Blue River. Mrs. Quimby selected the name because McKenzie River nearby is the home of the popular rainbow trout, /Salmo gairdneri. /*Pedee*, Polk. Pedee owes its name to Colonel Cornelius Gilliam who was born in North Carolina in 1798 and came to Oregon in 1844. He was killed in 1848. Either he, or members of his family, named Pedee Creek, a tributary to Luckiamute River. Pedee community is near the mouth of this creek. The name is, of course, from the famous river of North and South Carolina which was doubtless frequently in the minds of the Gilliams. The stream in the South is officially Peedee, but the place in Oregon is spelled Pedee. *Gilbert*, Multnomah. Gilbert was a station on the Portland Traction Company line east of Lents Junction. The name is preserved in the Gilbert district of Portland including Gilbert School The name comes from William M. Gilbert who in the late 1880's farmed near what is now SE 122nd Ave and Foster Road. Gilbert died in Portland in 1950. Now its off to bed for another day of reunion tomorrow :) // -- Jan Bony Oregon GenWeb Coordinator: http://www.rootsweb.com/~orgenweb
