ROGERS POISONED DEATH OF MATILDA ROGERS - Verdict of the Coroners Jury -William Bergfeldt the Accused The sudden and somewhat mysterious death of Matilda C. Rogers, June 30th, at the Rogers farm on Mill creek, lead to an investigation by a coroners jury, about which our readers are familiar. That the jury found evidences sufficient to warrant the arrest of William Bergfeldt, son-in-law of deceased, is shown by the verdict, from which we quote as follows: We the jury empanneled [sic] by the coroner of Wasco county, Or., to inquire into the cause of the death of the late Matilda C. Rogers, find that her death was caused by poison administered by some person; that we have, from the testimony taken and presented to us, good reason to believe that Wm. Bergfeldt is the person who is guilty, and who was instrumental in procuring the means of producing her said death by poison. Signed: S.B. Adams, Charles F. Mitchell, H.H. Smith, Hugh Gourlay, Charles W. Harter, Geo. A. Liebe. Dated Dalles City, July 29th, 1892 Soon after the signing of the verdict the accused was placed under arrest, and at 2 p.m. was arraigned before Justice Schutz for examination on the charge of murder, attended by Judge A.S. Bennett as counsel. Hon. W.H. Wilson, district attorney, appearing for the state. Attorney's presented the case, and pending the question of bonds under the statues, which was taken under advisement by the court, the matter was postponed until 5 p.m. today. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the sheriff. The keg was placed in a hearse at the brass rail, Rialto grill. The procession moved through the theatrical district in a misty rain. Then the head of the key was broken in and the beer poured down the sewer. Nobody seemed to care much about it all. 3. Do you have any information on any Dodges that came to Oregon in the late 1800's and were in the Jacksonville area. Jesse Dodge and Susan Dodge. They were in the Willow Springs area in 1880's. They had a daughter that married John Henry Jennings in Grants Pass and later went to the Burns area. It was a real small town then and many of the small stops back in 1950's and before have been abandoned. I lived in Hrmiston in 1950's and part of 1960's. Place has grown a lot. We lived at the Umatila Ordinance housing placd at Ordinance across from the rmy Depot untill they wanted and did turn it into a Pig Farm;. in about 1956 (?)., I worked in a restrant at what was Bucks Corner on old Hy. 30 and now is I-80. There were a lot of rancher's that came in from there to Heppner. Got to know many of the names. Later when I moved to Hermiston I worked in the Groc. d stores, Safeway and Stewarts Mkt. in abt.1964/5 I moved to Pasco Wa. and worked there in Restrant and Groc stores. a lot of jobs were only hireing for 3 or 4 days so had o get another one to get mpre working time to live.
